I work in a liquor store and it's honestly 10% or less, mainly because the alcoholics know they can't cause problems or we could ban them. They come in, get their stuff and leave in two minutes. It also helps I am working in a gov't run state store, so people feel less inclined to cause problems because of that(I think).

Back in high school I worked in a clothing department store during Xmas season. Id say only like1% were rude. Had one lady who kept throwing stuff on my counter and saying she was making a pile of things to buy later. My boss came by to tell me to put it all away. I tried explaining this to the customer and she freaked out on me. That was the only shitty thing I can remember

I worked at different stores and supermarkets, customers never gave me a problem. I made friends with people and it was very chill.

One lady came up to me and asked for a sandwich but she was eating an ice cream on a cone. She was doing things with her mouth on purpose with the ice cream and I froze in disbelief she was doing that in front of me.
Her girl friends were all laughing because they knew what she was doing. I had a good laugh.

Thats when you close 10 minutes early and ignore the speaker.

When i was low level management, we did that every night just to snub those fuckers and never got caught.

The listed closing time should be when you stop taking orders. So the listed closing time probably needed to be earlier IMO.

I aspire to have that right one day, lol. As it is I start pitching some of the daily made stuff 5-10 mins early so dish doesn't have to wait till close to get it. If those customers want full menu they shoulda come earlier.

Maybe 15% or so are some degree of rude. Truly terrible? Maybe 1 in 200. We have one woman who tried to return a jigsaw a day after the return period had ended, then started hyperventilating and complaining when we said no. The boss told her to swap it for another jigsaw just to get rid of her because the shop was busy.

The jigsaw she was trying to return? It cost her 1.

Then the idiot next to her in the return line sees that you let a late return slide and they bring in something they bought 11 years ago and demands a refund. Naturally with the excuse of "WELL I SAW YOU LET HER DO IT!", and it becomes a big ordeal.

Doesnt matter if you only let it slide by 1 day, they will make it an issue.

It may be considered anal to try to deny a return the day after the cutoff, but the more this happens the more people realize they can abuse it and that same customer may be back to return other shit, then you have people return 90% eaten food items they "didnt like" or clothes bought 14 years ago.

The thing is, retail workers are generally okay with letting close cutters slide if they are nice, but you can never tell which ones are legitimately appologietic and which ones just act that way to get the expectation that rules don't matter whatchu gonna do.

Probably around a 30% since its general retail and honestly not sure how anyone functions. I get more cases of people just standing and not saying a damn thing waiting for my attention when Im dojng something.

The worst though are the kind of people that more or less interrupt when Im with another customer. One time I had a guy get upset as I basically told him it would be a moment to answer his question while I was talking with another guest.

Haven't worked retail in a long time, but as a cashier I usually only ran into one insufferable customer every couple of days, with probably around 100-200 transactions each day, depending on the length of the shift and the amount people were buying.

So, less than 1% of my customers were openly awful. The ones that were, though? Holy shit. People screaming in line over laundry detergent, people taking clearance stickers off a $7 product and trying to convince me a $100 cordless phone set was actually on clearance for $7...and of course the straight up brawl that happened in my lane because some older white lady went back to get an item from the other side of the store--I suspended her transaction and started the next one while she was gone.

When she came back, I was finishing the customer who had been behind her, and she didn't like that. It only took at most 45 seconds or so after she got back, but she just was not having it. The woman I was finishing up with started some shit by making sly comments, and then--BAM. Hair-pulling, shrieking, wrestling on the ground.

It was the most insanely pointless thing I had ever seen in my life. People are unhinged sometimes.

On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, I once had a little girl interrupt me while speaking with another customer to help find her mother. Back when I was young, would have never thought to ask anyone else. My parent would have just found me..and angry.

See that would be something understandable and might consider that with younger people though more often the ones that do that need something. But the people that tend to do this more are adults.

I help people with that when necessary. It isn't so much that, but one licensee(bar or restaurant with license) buys a ton of stuff, like 500+ bottles at at time. Some of it is ordered in with my store as the pickup point, some is picked up in store. Last friday was 34 cases of items going to them. But in that case it's more so me sliding down a belt into their truck.

But no, a regular person buying like 50 items wouldn't really bother me.

In this sense, it was those that would barely even say hi or anything.
Also one thing I noticed is, Boomer Men like to tap their cards on the table before they hand it over.

The Dollar Tree seems to be really bad with this. I've never worked there but I've seen it as a customer. There are always bitchy customers there, usually middle age or older women who throw a fit because the entire store isn't recognizing them as the #1 customer.

Speaking of dollar stores, is it like corporate policy that any dollar general that undergoes the "produce section upgrade" has to then be perpetually understaffed to the point it isn't able to actually be open regular hours?

i work at a large gas station chain in my state and it entirely depends on the store, as well as the shift

in my experience the worst customers are a combination of

redneck trash
old white people
punks in middle class areas who think they're ghetto but wouldn't actually last a day in the ghetto
any and all truckers, truckers are filthy pigs

anyway nights are the best shift because i don't have to be nice to customers

It isn't corporate policy, it is the insane amount of goods that those stores get at any particular time which pulls work away from all the other positions (in order to stock).
