Rothfuss built up such an interesting, expansive world with great characters. Can't wait to start to 2nd book, I'm glad I didn't start this series earlier though given that the 2nd book came out in 2011 and the 3rd one won't be out until November.

Anyone here read it before? What're your thoughts if you have?

It typically take me awhile to read books but these two I just devoured. Simply incredible books. The guy knows how to write so well.

When the third book drops, I'm going to treat myself to reading the first two again first before reading the third.

I used to love and adore those books. One day I will go back and read them again. I lost hope a long time ago for ever getting the 3rd book.

That doesn't look like book three. It's a novella set in the same universe. Book three was always supposed to be titled The Doors of Stone.

It's going to be another book like The Slow Regard of Silent Things. Set in the same universe, but not the conclusion of the original story.

It's not even wholly original - it's just an expanded version of a short story he already published 10 years ago. So there's even less effort put into it than you might think at first glance.

Rothfuss is a slacker.

Patrick Rothfuss said that the 3rd book is already complete and just needed to be handed off to the editor. That was about 10-15 years ago. Actually he said the whole trilogy was complete and would release in 2007.

And the editor said she'd doubted he'd written a single word of it. And she said that in 2020.

I'm convinced he found himself in a similar situation that George RR Martin did - neither one of them actually know how to finish their stories anymore, so they're procrastinating working on them until the fans stop caring and leave them alone.

The difference is that Rothfuss likely still cares about his world and the fans and wants to finish, he's just too distracted by all the other stuff literary fame has allowed him to do (charity work, podcasting, playing D&D, game dev, writing comics, hanging out with semi-celebs, etc). Whereas Martin now hates the setting and hates the fans, so will only ever finish the final ASoIaF books if he needs money. Which he never will because of all the money he got paid by HBO. Basically, he wants to die leaving it unfinished so the fans can suffer.

But who's planting the shards that cause every trilogy to balloon out into 7+ books?

Because they got both George RR Martin and Robert Jordan with that one.

My favorite series so far, but I don't think the third book is coming out. I also devoured the books immediately when I first read them. To this day not another book series has captured me as much as KKC has.

This is coming from a guy who read all of Wheel of Time. It seems so average compared to KKC.

I read it so fast too, probably my 2nd favorite fantasy author after Tolkien and probably top 5 overall but I'm not sure if I'm willing to put him above Crichton, Clarke, or King yet.

Just finished the Wise Man's Fear, since this topic was still up I figured it would be best to talk about it here.

This should probably be longer than a trilogy, I mean, it's 2 books in and he covered roughly 6 years of his life story. He has got at least another decade and a half between the time he ended at the 2nd night and the present day, probably more, either that book is going to be huge or he'll have to gloss over a lot of his adult life to finish up in 3 books.

I just hope Denna shows up at the Waystone Inn at the end of the last book.

It's no wonder Rothfuss is taking so long for the 3rd book

Odds are likely some of the stuff will get glossed over that has huge impact like Kvothe's pirating incident where there's a shipwreck and mutiny I believe? It was at the start of one of the chapters. That in of itself could be a whole chapter or several if Rothfuss wanted to expand on it, but it was relegated to a couple of sentences. I STILL remember it years later because to me it felt significant however.

As for book 3 coming out, no idea, when it does I'll re read it.

I definitely do recommend reading that Bast one off for sure, and if you can handle the differing style Slow Regard of Silent Things. Some of the fans hate the style it's written in, but I enjoyed it just because more lore.

Yeah but there is a big difference between glossing over a few weeks and a few years
