Like all students and teachers, I look forward to summer break. Counting down the days at the end of the year. I love not having to set an alarm or come up with lesson plans. It is a nice break from work to charge my batteries and have some free time.

But at the same time I hate summer break. After the first week of break, when the initial joy of sleeping in wears off, depression sets in. Now my circumstances are different than most teachers, I'm a single male bachelor with no kids, which is part of the issue. I'm just alone all the time. And when I am alone all I do is overthink and over analyze everything going on in my life until I drive myself crazy. Could I get a summer job or teach summer school? Yes, but I stubbornly don't want to give up the freedom of summer that I have earned, even if it is very isolating most of the time.

Anyways these have just been some ramblings. It is summer and I am currently sad.

What about picking up a hobby over summer?
It's not work, and can keep your mind/body occupied.

This is definitely the time, like number two said, to develop a new hobby. Something in person, that gathers you around people with a mutual interest.

That's like, the life speed run to making friends

My main hobby is running and summer is the only time I really have time to do it as much as I want.
I also coach Cross Country and we have informal practices during the summer so I get to see people then.

I am a single man living in rural Ohio and I am at the top of the salary schedule.
In the grand scheme of things I might not make that much, but really I live like a king.
I am also getting a $3,000 raise next school year, so money is not a problem.

I love my job. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Part of the reason I get depressed every summer is because I miss the connections I have with my students on a daily basis.

As a former teacher, I used to always find new things to do over summer break. Get out of my comfort zone and try going places I've never been before. It doesn't necessarily have to be anywhere outside of the city you live, but just explore new opportunities. Try new restaurants, bars, look for local events to go to etc. All the things you probably don't have time for while you're working during the school year.

I legit feel bad for people who dont know how to be happy or spend their time without work or by themselves.

Definitely need to get yourself some hobbies or something.

I actually really like being by myself most of the time. I can watch movies and play video games or go wherever I want to go. But something happens in the summer where I am just by myself too much.

Dude, you gotta go out and make friends... Sounds like you were too deep into work and had no social life outside of it

TC - I applaud you for making a difference in a world stacked against you from administrative red tape/shenanigans to unruly students to even more unruly parents.

I know it is a hard time and have some teacher friends myself in a similar situation. Now I'm nothing but another GameFAQer so take this for what you will but you won't find your happiness in another or in children. A significant other will not alone bring happiness to an unhappy person. Please seek some help, it's ok to talk about these things.

I've got a lot of family who are teachers (dodged the bullet myself) in the UK. Everything from public school to a PRU.

They've all had positions they hated, but eventually found somewhere that suited them, and are pretty happy.

I have friends and I do things, but I guess it is just hard to make up for 7 hours of daily interactions, most of which are very positive.
