A VP doesn't really do much. One of their main jobs is to cast the tie breaking vote in the Senate. In that regard Harris has been more active then lost VPs given how the Senate is right now.

And being the tiebreaker vote in the Senate doesn't mean much if you can't get your caucus to be in lockstep.

To be fair to Harris and the rest of the dems there really isn't much they can do (aside from like minting the coin or invoking the 14th or whatever, but yeah they probably won't).

This is basically a fight between McCarthy and the MAGAs that don't like him. McCarthy could hold a vote on the debt ceiling and probably has enough to get it through, however if he does that he loses his job because the MAGAs will vote to remove him as speaker. So if he wants to keep his job he has to make the MAGAs happy, but all they wanna do is cause harm so that it hurts Biden and helps Trump, but if he does that he pisses of his corporate masters who don't want the economy to be hurt.

I feel like, like with most Harris quotes, there's a perfectly reasonable but very bland read on what she says, and everyone just pretends it's something silly and unreasonable because it's more entertaining.

The debt ceiling is going to be raised, and in the meantime, I'll just sit back and watch McCarthy's life continue to get even more miserable

The MAGAs don't have a prayer of winning, nobody else in the Repub camp is desperate enough a career-climber to make the deals he did, and we get a sequel to shitshow selection we got earlier in the year. Hell of a way to make the party look absolutely terrible.

Voting....for representatives....like her???? She's already there. They're already there. The problem is the people who are there who won't listen to reason because that's not what they were sent there for. The same things that always work to get unreasonable people to chill: strikes, boycotts, civil disobedience, marches, etc. Or if you wanna limit it to more formal moves, even legal options like the coin and the 14th amendment. It's not clear those'll work though, so it's down to the things I listed first to scare Republicans. You might say that's not realistic or that's not the role of the VP, but that's exactly the problem. Right wingers use every tactic available to them, down to threatening violence if they don't get their way. Meanwhile Dems abandon all effective tools and then throw up their hands when things don't work.

Well, I guess it's true I could be more proactive in telling Biden he needs to not give in to the Republican hostage demands, learn from Obama's mistake in 2011, and just invoke the 14th amendment which literally point-blank states our responsibility to pay our debts and our credit shall not be questioned.

The debt ceiling was only created to increase funding during WWll, it's wholly unnecessary and now Republicans are using it as a tool to threaten the world's economy just because they think it will help them win elections and regain power if they destroy the international economy under a Democratic admin.

No, "shutting it all down" would wreck not only our economy to a ridiculous degree, it would wreck the world economy. The U.S. has had shutdowns, but it's never defaulted on its debt.

Invoking the 14th is how you don't give in to the fascists without also shutting anything down except their hostage demands.

That's fun and more useful than whatever it is we can do. If my rep contacted me and asked me to do a bit of house of representatives stuff, I'd probably agree. But contacting your rep, who probably has like 750k over people in their district asking them to do something is going to be worthless unless you are very influential in the area.
