I think the two movies that best exemplify this is The Last Jedi and Super Mario Bros. The Last Jedi gets amazing critic score on its merits as a movie, but gets shitted on by users for being a bad Star Wars movie. Critics shits on Super Mario Bros for being a mediocre to mid film but users love it because it's a really good Mario movie with a lot of charm and love put into it. I can see both sides. The only time I don't rely on both critic or user scores is when it gets political like with TLOU2 or any of the Controversial Dave Chappelle Netflix specials.

Complaining about what others like is always narcissistic, if not because it was review bombed or something disingenuous.

It will never not be silly behavior to me. For some folks out there, other people having a different opinions from them may as well not be a concept. It's like they need critics to agree with them to completely validate something they like, otherwise, they respond with aggression.

It's funny because they also tend to fall in the "nobody cares about critics" crowd, who ironically care about critics opinions more than anyone else it seems.

Dead Silence

One of my favourite horror movies that got panned by critics. I'm so happy that years later I discovered it had a cult following and the audience reception was much higher than the critic reviews.

It usually indicates that it's a bad movie from an existing ip and fans just can't let it go. If it's a completely original ip it probably means it's good dumb fun.

Yeah. Id argue it feels kind of special when you find love for a 6/10 game. Feels like you see something others can't or didn't try to see.

I can name a bunch of movies that I like that got panned by critics. The difference is, unlike a bunch of weirdos on the internet, I don't make it a big part of my identity to whine about how wrong they are for having a different opinion from me.

Like, I love the movie "Super." Most other people? Not so much lol.

The idea of critics is absurd. Their opinions have no more value than anyone else, and they're not experts like some people seem to think of them as. Regardless, it's easy enough to decide what you think of something for yourself and not waste your time having people tell you what to like.

Because critics don't typically go out of their way to froth at the mouth and complain about how the users are wrong/stupid/out of touch, etc. when opinions on something don't align.

I understand why it's a profession, but I agree in that you shouldn't give them all this power as if they are the definitive deciders of what's good or not.
Like I mentioned earlier, it's always funny to me how these anti-critic people are also the main people who care about what critics think more than anyone else.

How do you account for the one's that are anti-critic but don't complain? Wouldn't their absence from conversations just be logical?

The Last Jedi is the only genuinely good movie out of the sequel trilogy.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I see that's the general consensus surrounding it. Maybe because I'm not a huge Star Wars fan and my expectations were low when I saw TFA; but I was surprised how much I ended up really liking the movie. I hear all the time that it's just a copy of A New Hope, but the movie really did something for me that ANH just doesn't.

well it is much flashier, prettier, and has slight changes to reflect modern audiences' preferences and sensibilities.

My immediate take away was how, in terms of special effects and presentation, they took the best aspects of the original and prequel trilogies and had this nice mix of practical and CGI that went well together.
That, and I really liked the new main charactersRey, Fin, Poe, and Kylo. They all had so much potential and I really wanted to see more of them/see them grow. Plus, I was invested in all the stuff they were setting up like Luke, Snoke, and the Knights of Ren. Saw it in theaters, like, 3 times. I should give that movie another watch soon.

Ok i can walk it back a bit. TFA was a fine movie. The overall framework was still just ANH but there was enough fresh material in there to take it new directions. Playing it safe was smart.

It was then just massively outshines by The Last Jedi for me, and then RoSW came in and shit on everything

The Last Jedi got an A Cinemascore which is the barometer the actual movie studios use.

I think the internet has warped the discussion around certain movies. At the end of the day people who talk about Star Wars (or any movie) online are a more specific demographic than the people who just buy a ticket and move on with their lives.

I usually agree with the critics, and when a movie has a high critic score and a low user score it usually means it is more artistic or has an ambiguous ending.

there are plenty of times where I dont agree with the critics though, like bullet train for instance. Actually there was this movie on Hulu I just watched that I had never heard of and it had a high critic score and a low audience score and it was super.. dumb.

I dont remember what it was called. Something about people dying on purpose for science so they could become ghosts. It was labeled as science fiction and there was nothing sci-fi about it

I don't have this massive, irrational hate-boner for TLJ like some people seem to have. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Mainly because, as I mentioned in my previous post, I just got so invested in the stuff that the TFA was setting up. Seeing the TLJ not build on some of those things was kind of a bummer. But the film itself had some neat beats and some well-made elements in its own right. It's definitely a movie I'm mixed on.

I think the frustrating thing about TRoS is that a good portion of that movie would have served much better as a follow up to TFA. But yeah, of the sequel trilogy, it's easily the worst. Just a mess of a movie. Felt bad bad for J.J., there was only so much he could do with that burning ship.
