I went back to patrol this weekend because I left the team I joined(too much politics). Theyre short staffed beyond all the relief. And call volume is just like nothing Ive ever seen before. If before COVID there would be 2-3 calls holding. Theres now probably 20+. A dial tone goes off whenever theres a hot call. Usually meaning like an active violent felony in progress. That thing is going off like 10 every minutes.

but anyways. We have kind of a verbal agreement. The squads do the calls and everyone just leaves me alone and lets me be pro-active. I know all the criminals and I always get crazy stuff. We have to put a proactive unit out because of all the violent crime uptick now. So its just automatically me every day

I would be lucky to get into a foot pursuit every couple months. I got into THREE yesterday.

The first, I was watching a drug house and noticed one of its occupants walking in the middle of the street with a moped with no tags. I stopped him, he lied about who he was and the moped was stolen. He tried running at 300 pounds and broke a fence and I had to bring him down.

the second, I helped a unit with a suicide call. This parent were trying to get their 17 year old on a psych hold because he did meth and was losing his mind. I went to make a phone call to my supe and my partner scared the kid and he went running. He jumped a wall and I was waiting on the other side. Then he tried to square up on me and we had to go on the ground and I slammed both my knees on concrete.

Then finally, I watched like 10 juvies dressed in all black with sheistys on. park a brand new sports car behind a liquor store. Of course, when I got close, the vehicle was stolen. All 10 take off running, one of them drops a Glock with a full auto switch. The one I do catch, of course gets immediately released from juvie to his parents in one hour. Gets arrested later that night by a friend, with another Glock lol.

I woke up today and my knees and lower back hurt so bad. Maybe Its time to use my college degree on something CE. Cuz my number for detective has not been pulled yet

I was gonna ask about possibility of moving to a desk job. So it sounds like a lottery or something? What do you mean number pulled?

Also aren't you near Vegas? I know crime right outside the strip is always a shitshow but is it getting bad everywhere?

I tested for the position last year for the first time last year. Theres a certain number of years before youre eligible that you have to be on for. I just made it with a month after to test. I had no prior detective or investigative experience when I did. It was a HARD test. 200 people tested, 100 made it. I scored middle of the road. Which was real good. They pick starting from highest placement. But since 2020, theres no movement because theres no cops to work patrol. So I cant move. But im going this year I score at the top. I finished a bunch of schools and certifications detectives need because of the team I joined.

and crime is the same all over the country right now. Ill tell you right now, its Domestic violence and juvies that are making this a nightmare. Regardless of status, everybody is just fighting at home. And the juvie thing. Its like, everyone is tired of it. It all started with this Kia boys shit. Its just a mass stealing of cars to crash and commit robberies with. They all have stolen full auto glocks and rifles. Walking down blocks breaking into peoples. They dont care because they know they get released in one hour regardless of what they do. Its exhausting

If you held more pizza parties at your local rec center then crime would drop like a rock.

What opportunities would you have to get into something like forensics? Do they offer officers education toward more complex jobs within the force like the military does with the GI Bill?

I'd think a lot like the Army, police have a lot of non-direct desk and lab jobs for people who dont want to be on the street, or have aged out of it.

theres other sections to work at but theres a freeze because patrol staffing is a priority. And were short like several hundred cops. I have the GI bill but Im using a program through my union for a free bachelors. I finished an associates. Jsut need to finish up the bachelors

so is it just groups of under-18s who get released because they're minors?

are there a lot of repeat offenders in your case? letting some first-time 17 year old out right away (while still shitty) makes sense, but if it's the same people coming time after time, then that's just bogus

OK first we need to realize police are part of the problem. Not all crimes require police intervention the police should be a last resort. Like what reason would you ever have to chase some one all you do is put innocent lives in danger. It is literally proven people will act in a more positive way if approached by an unarmed community safety officer. Pretty much all problems with the police are because people are literally afraid for their lives so they run at which point the police start shooting and innocents get killed. So maybe police should be less trigger happy and people wouldn't run from them. Remember you are innocent until proven guilty but in the eyes of the police you are just guilty.

Props for not using weapons when taking these people down. I imagine the worst part about the job is having to chase someone on foot. I cant imagine being in my 30s (personally speaking) and having to chase teenagers with the result feeling like a waste of time.
