If I want a cheeseburger, its like a dollar or two at McDonalds. Another dollar or two for fries. Especially with reward points and daily deals

at home

6 dollars for ground beef and I can only buy a pound at the minimum
3 dollars for a packet of cheese
2 dollars for lettuce
1 dollar for a tomato
3 dollars for a package of buns
7 dollars for a carton of eggs to place one egg on top of the burger
4 dollars for a sack of potatoes

cook time will also be an ~hour

What the fuck are you doing to those burgers that makes them take an hour to make? The longest you can make the process take is 20 minutes if you bake them. As for the price of ingredients, everything except the hamburger you'll only be using part of for the meal and you can save the rest for later. Also, you can get as many as four burgers out of a pound of meat. There will be left overs just from cooking the burgers.

While it is cheaper to order fast food, those numbers are way off. You are comparing higher quality ingredients to literal Mcdonalds. Stick to store-brand and it's closer to this

$4/lb for 80% ground. So a quarter pound burger - $1
Sandwich cheese is $2 for a pack of 16, so $.13
A head of lettuce is $1.5. You are only using a few leafs, so maybe $.05?
Tomatoes - $2.5 for a pint. Again, maybe $.10
Hamburger buns - $2 for 8. $.25
Total for a single homemade quarter pounder, no onions, pickles or sauce = $1.53. Add a few cents more extras.

And if you are spending an hour on the cook, you will be eating a hockey puck.

When it comes to food and cooking, Internet nerds always act like they know their shit.

Forgive me but I highly doubt the majority of you guys are so well adjusted and productive that you know how to budget your finances and prioritize your time to buy all your ingredients, prep them correctly and cook them every single day and also all make it sound like it's easier than putting Legos together. I mean, who are you fucking trying to kid?

I usually just eat chicken breasts and potatoes. Tbf, even that minimalist approach is still like $4 a meal now.

Sure, there's some people out there doing that (TC has on more than one occasion tried to flex his cooking aptitude), but that's not what people are doing itt

Making food will always be cheaper when taking quantity into account than buying from a restaurant

Yup it's ridiculous. I can get a cooked Domino's large 1 topping for $5 with their $3 off carry out promo but a frozen Digiorno's Pizza is like $8.50 at the store which is just not worth it lol. The government needs to give all these companies a swift kick in the ass somehow for them increasing prices this much in less than 3 years.

Frozen pizzas you're paying for convenience

Buying flour, yeast, cheese, pepperoni, and tomato sauce is going to be maybe more expensive up front, but the capacity to make more over time or to use the ingredients for other things comes out so far ahead of either frozen or a pizza place

I mean, I guess I can agree with an argument that for some people, it's cheaper to just eat out for meals. Mainly for people who absolutely can't stand eating leftovers and "simple" meals.

Because if you can't eat simple leftovers, much of the cost savings of cooking goes away.

I guess. I don't know. I've come to realize that some people just find it easier to eat the same thing over and over again and some truly find it difficult. I'm someone who can eat the same thing again and again and not get bored of it as long as it tastes good but I just know some people can't do that so cooking becomes a harder process for them than it is for me.

I think it might be easier if you're just eating for yourself too... Like going out to eat or grabbing something for myself is pretty cheap but for my roommates who are married, it's a lot more expensive for both of them (even worse if they get something delivered)... So they get groceries to make meals... Also they're both good at cooking where I can't cook something unless it has microwave or air fryer instructions on it...
