- i think i'd only really heard one song from this before, and i think i liked all the others i hear here actually a lot more than what i was initially familiar with. a very competent fm ost for sure, i was pretty amazed at the ethereal pad at the start of bgm5. the way bgm6 doesn't make it clear it's gonna be bouncy 6/8 but eventually becomes such is pretty fun too. what an "fl81" ost this is, damn

- another case where i'd be able to tell this is an FL81 game even if i wasn't looking! oh man I remember lotus maze from the rse-style remix for my ranking topic.

Despite sounding nothing like my other nomination! Lotus Maze is always something that sounded more like Pokmon music (gen 4 specifically) than Touhou music to me, definitely something I wanted to include in my setlist!

- it's impossible to beat the spot-on pat metheny group of "THE CHASE ~Chase~" for me, i like that even more than most pmg tunes and that's one of the groups i listen to most often that's even out there! listening to this all together, which i hadn't in a while, i realize that's not the only jazz fusion group she did a pastiche of here. pretty sure CATALINA is supposed to be chick corea. yoko kanno is so good at pretending to be other people...

- you know i actually don't know what my favorite song is in this game is; just that these ones i picked definitively are my top 7 but i dunno what the order is tbh. lately i've been addicted to Starry Miracles but i probably listen to Born in the Dragon's Egg the most. and sometimes Forbidden Mistakes is my favorite even. who knows!

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
- actually slightly surprised to hear some of my favs from the game show up here; i just "assumed" the ones i liked most wouldn't be on a list someone else made. I'm into fire emblem music mostly for Hiroki Morishita (who is basically not on this one), but shadows of valentia still appeals to me because the composition of a lot of the older chiptune tracks by Yuka Tsujiyoko is something I love on their own, but hearing it in a lush orchestral arrange in this circumstance makes them even better to me! (i don't always prefer orchestral over chiptune, but this is a case where that really MAKES them for me). The unhinged intensity of The Scions Dance in Purgatory is so good. The Sacrifice and the Saint has some extra beats in each phrase and i like odd time signatures even in (or maybe especially in) very subtle small doses like that; and some of the later bits almost feel like morishita melodically to me, which obviously i welcome

- Altered Genos is my *checks spreadsheet* 15th favorite song in the world! I'm huge about Legacy and Ancient Weapon 1-2 as well

- i don't think it's TOO surprising i love Rapid as Wildfires?! a fairly 'mathematical' sound and very botw. and very marimba centered

Paradise Killer
- the deep fake organ in infinite luv is such a good sound, this track has the "lyle mays lead"(pat metheny group sound) too.......overall i always was pretty impressed with the instrumentation/production of paradise killer.

MOTHER 3
- it's so surreal to hear this selection because with mother 3, i mostly only ever choose to listen to a handful of specific songs from it (which i listen to A LOT). but all these share the instrumentation of the ones i fixate on, so it feels like i've veered into an alternate universe. Tracks with similar sound/style but totally different musical content from the ones i'm much more deeply familiar with. my favorite here is probably Fight with Mecha-Drago

Pokemon Legends: Arceus
- hb alraedy knows i love this ost. i'm very fond of the little i've played of the game itself but i'm only like 1% in because i immediately got distracted by some other games such as "Rama". anyway,,,,,Field (Late Night) is my 47th favorite song in the world! Wow! in general, as a long time fan of DPP, this ost gives me very nostalgaic chills, but i think i'd be hugely into it even without that context. i mean i loved that music in the first place for a reason. i think everyone in gamefreak has done amazing stuff, but it's no secret that i'm particularly attached to Hitomi Sato and Go Ichinose, who certainly defined a lot of the sound of this game!

- been into this great jazzy fusion ost for quite a while. New Mexico is my favorite place in the entire world and also my favorite song in this game and also where i live in real life

Atelier Shallie Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea
- i don't think it's a huge secret that i like gust! On the Old Road is on one of my personal playlists on my computer, a very SHORT playlist that i listen to very frequently. so I hear this song a lot, and like it a lot! enough to keep it on there anyway

The House in Fata Morgana
- On the Old Road is a very interesting mixture; the acoustic bass is almost like jazzy, but everything else about the is the exact opposite, militaristic and traditional. i know what to expect from this ost, and this "fits" with what i know what to expect, but i also absolutely would've never guess anything like this was what was coming next. i like it though, i like accordions...i blame gust for that

Shovel Knight
- i'm not sure if An Underlying Problem (The Lost City) is actually my favorite or if i've just heard it so much (while being a song i like) that it makes me 'nostalgic' for hearing it in places like b8 or whatever. but it's a great song. overall i respect jake kaufman a lot and shovel knight isn't an exception to my interest in him.

- Fires of Industry (Dustria) has some sharp fm e.piano sounds i like used high up, which isn't a choice i usually see for something intending to be 'aggressive', but i like the combination. the pace of it reminds me a lot of Mega Man Battle Network 2 OST - T20: Time Limit (Bomb Comp - QuickMan's Stage) and i like that song

Heartland
- with midi soundtracks I always wonder if I'd like the way they'd sound on some other format than the one they're being presented with. and there's hundreds of options. I may have to download these midis sometime and find out! but MSGS doesn't turn out too bad for these. Dancing Snakes has some interesting dissonances and challenging harmonic movement that I find fun. stewart rynn is nothing at all like zzzv imo, but they do have the very specific thing in common of being people who make music for doom wads that's unusually harmonically complex for music to even be at all, particularly in terms of movement between chords, even if subtle. i never took the time to get into stewart rynn's music despite being around his stuff for a long time, but i can imagine it growing on me easily if i just kept listening. there's so much there to acquire from it. . . .

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
- i think most of my favs in this set are in the alts, but i don't mind that as the main set is very strong (both in terms of personal taste and contest strength) too. if i had to pick one, it'd be Telluric Path, if only because i love every variation of that theme in the game (including the obvious, my favorite in the game: Tyrian Maze ~ Inner Chamber). the composition in these telluric path/tyrian maze related songs is great, but almost even more the sound choices: the echoy FM mallet percussion is such a beautiful sound that permeates everything.....i love that yes AHHHHHHHHh. These reverse strying sweeps!!!!!!!!!!

SimCity 4
- oh wow speaking of "Telluric Path Sounds" i LOVE the instrumentation on Metropolis. this ost is quite my style from what i've heard, in a sorta "neotokyo" way, but i don't know it too well. it's nice to be periodically reminded of it on b8 and stuff

CROSSNIQ+
- i can't decide what my fav crossniq song is. MECHANIQ and SUPERSONIQ (Tempus Cubiq) are the two main contenders for me. Huge fan of both DV-i and Virix of course; and this game is pretty fun too!

Yugioh Master Duel
- Keycard #6 is like a basiscape BREAKING NEWS song kind of like "Chlorella production manager" by Hitoshi Sakimoto but it's like the "boss" version of it because despite the happy winds, there are angry choir people screaming at me sometimes in here

- yeah i like shmup music and i'm a big basiscape fan. no surprise i'm into this one. i was wondering why "Aerial - Sadness Bathes in Dust" was so much more deeply familiar to me than the other ones, but it's because i'm particularly into Mitsuhiro Kaneda's work. i LOVE namiki too, but kaneda's like a top 10 composer to me, so i often will just go through every song of his i have access to in a binge listening session, clearly that one included. anyway, big fan of that one in particular but all the music here is great

Kaze No Notam
- this is one of my brother's favorite soundtracks right now. and i think that reference point has been getting me even more into it myself. it's always been something i felt was masterful production but now that i've spent the past few years learning even more about that topic explicitly in reference to 90s synth-driven music, i have even more respect for how this managed to pull off what it did. Menu is an indiv track i got OBSESSED with when my brother showed it to me in october2022; i had totally forgotten about it until then, though i'd recognized it. but i guess my tastes changed because in the past i just thought it was like 'cool', but now it's one of my favorite game tracks out there! i put it on my list of potential songs to nom for vgmc next year too. I love the weird piano line, the tension, uncertainty, while still simultaneously being a chill hot air balloon song with out-of-this world sounds on synths that i think sound even cooler than most synths.

Ano, Subarashii wo Mou Ichido
- RE11 is hitting the spot more than i remember. overall i think i like all of these more than i did the last time i listened to them. which is impressive because i am half asleep right now (falling asleep between every song again) and can not procss any music i am listening to, so this music must be REALLY good if i'm getting this excited about it. i don't remember the pseudo-polymeter in sa17 but i welcome it. I;'m suddenly realizing how much this stuff actually is the same mood as kaze no notam, for the same reason i like kaze no notam. lots of fancy sounds poking their in all at the sametime without the ethereal atmosphere being compromised by the density either even though it is even denser than a concrete mixer

Guilty Gear XX
- i always liked blue water blue sky, because of that synth bell starting it off; i've said it before but i think that that type of sound combined with metal is really perfect because it's one of the only sounds that can even pierce through aggressive guitars. it's why metal keyboard players so often used very high synth bells or fake xylophone-like things or whatever, it just is the perfect sound to cut through. but i like the way it feels, it's slike you are in a scary lava hell but ther eis a glimmer of a blue sky sun beam above you in a hole in the ceiling and that feeling is neat

Bayonetta
- bayonetta is so very much like you are at a casino; it's very gilded, everything is shiny and overstimulating and luxurious with diamonds on that. climactic battle represents this to me especially because it's piano feels so much like a rich old people card world but then there are the strings and brass going in their own unrelated directions and it feels so fancy and las vegas. i think that's very cool

Rabi-Ribi
- The Truth Never Spoken makes me nostalgaic for 1999 anime songs that don't actually exist which is pretty neat. it feels like i have heard it 10000 times from watching a show i watch a lot even though i have only heard it 1 time, i like the sound design and late 90s/early00s dance music style a lot.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
- the choice to have gritty rock organ in moonlight capital is pretty fun; maybe just because i like the sound, and motoi sakuraba and 70s prog and stuff, but you know it brings something to light for me. this melodic style at times is actually very very much exactly like the things i listed above; i feel like i'm listening to camel or sakuraba, but i might not've noticed it was compositionally comparable if it was just like normal instruments

Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru
- i'm a huge xaki fan so it's no surprise that proud-dust is my favorite one here! and i'm unsurprisingly big on 7-weights too.

The Caligula Effect 2
- Just Praying (Regret) has some cool atonal bits that sound like the rhythm game songs that are the ones i like; i guess the whole thing has that mood, like if some wacky tomosuke or m@sumi song was actually an anime op

Megido 72
- Fighting for the Sake of Others is doing a lot of the rhythmic things i like to see; tricky over-the-barline stuff, ambiguous-ish bar phrasing, and it all feels seamless like al of the marbles in a marble maze eventually go to the right place but they all take some really convoluted path to get there but you also only have to rotate the object that all of the marbles are in like 4 times and it somehow fits together perfectly. OMG Wtf Crafty Inverse Moon is like some hiromi ass shit; dude deogenerate look up "hiromi - Suite Escapism: Reality" or "hiromi xyz" or something if you like this you might like her stuff . yeah that's my favorite one here haha

Super Mario Galaxy
- i think these days i appreciate the slow synthy super mario galaxy songs the best; they evoke 'space' the most effectively to me. and i already love the sound design of the synth layers of the ost; and all involved composers i feel are compositionally brilliant too. Space Junk Galaxy hits what i'm describing the best of this set; but if you asked me a few years ago i couldn't have fathomed having that answer as my favorite of this set.

Samurai Shodown (2019)
- Fin of Invincibility: I LOVE THE PARTS WHERE THE GUITAR DESCENDS DOWN IN FOURTHS OMG ;;;;like at 0:19 / 0:32 and various other times int he songQUARTALS ARE THE MEANING OF LIFE; there is NO BETTER SEQUENCE OF NOTES IN THE UNIVERSE; I WOULD GIVE MY LIFE TO BECOME A QUARTAL. :53 is really great a mood too; it gets more jazz fusiony chill for a bit in what's a more segmented 7+9 way of breaking up 4/4 container, rather than the pounding of everything before. it's a very welcome break from the intensity but then it ramps back up which is ok too! especially because that means i get to hear the guitar do that weird quartal sequence again sometimes. anyways also i like the bouncy mood of San-San and i respect how it manages to take pentatonic scale oriental cliches but make them actually not cheesy at all, extra layers recontextualize the simpler bits in very interesting ways

Treasure of the Rudras
- god i almost feel like i don't want to single out any song, but just say that i love the first couple seconds of almost every one of these haha. I never noticed before, but these all have like strangely proggy and frantic opening bits before the song 'starts' and i love that of course. and OF COURSe i love SHadow of Illusion for being [9/8 + 4/4]x8, [5/8]x16
