Board 8 > A Pokemon Red challenge I want to try

I've never really tried a challenge run of a Pokemon game before, so the challenge I want to try is that I cannot catch any wild Pokemon. Only Pokemon obtainable through means other than catching are allowed, and obviously trading with another game is cheating.

A pretty decent team I came up with just from what I know is available to me through those means is Venusaur, Clefable, Nidoqueen, Dragonite, Mr. Mime and Lapras, none of which are exactly awful for Gen I and some are outright standards. The biggest challenge will be the first third of the game, where I'm limited to the starter and Gyarados. Other Pokemon that I have available to me if I want to try are Hitmonlee/chan, Jolt/Vapor/Flareon, Kabutops/Omastar, Porygon, Kadabra (no trading), Scyther, and Aerodactyl. I could also do Charizard instead if Venusaur but I'm pretty sure choosing Squirtle makes this impossible due to the need for Cut early on. I'll have to look up to see if I missed anything but I think I got it down.

That sounds like most people's normal playthrough.

I don't think you'll have trouble beating the combat challenges. I know someone who completed the entire game using only wigglytuff

Just confirm your hm setup works and you're good to go

Red is probably the easiest game to do this on, since I'm pretty sure Gen 1 has more gift Pokemon than any other game.

And I recommend Bulbasaur unless you really want to challenge yourself, since Bulbasaur can easily carry a playthough to the Game Corner where stuff really opens up.
