The only people who didn't like GTA IV were children who couldn't get used to the driving physics. It's still the most immersive game in the series, bar none.

Well I was technically a child at the time, and I did, in fact, found the driving and physics to be complete shit. I also really hated the gunplay.

The only thing that was keeping me going was the story/characters, but after a while I gave up on it and gave the game away.

It was the most immersive game in the series, period. It did a far better job accurately depicting NY/NJ than V did Los Angeles.

That's honestly the reason I'm playing it again. I've heard a lot of good things about the expansions. It was enough for me to give it another shot.

Okay. In my opinion, V is so much more fun to play. I don't care about immersion if I'm not having fun with the game.

Early game tip/trick.

There's a way to get the combat pistol a lot earlier than waiting to unlock it.

After you do the mission that gets you the regular pistol. Go to the gun store and shoot the guy there in the leg. Wait a sec until he pulls out his gun, then kill him. You can then swap your handgun for his combat pistol.

You'll have a 2 star wanted level though, so quickly leave and lose the cops.

That's a bit too late for me lol. I already did that mission.
Plus, I'm kind of weird. I don't like killing innocent people in GTA games. I actually go out of my to not run pedestrians over or avoid hitting them in fire fights.

i thought it was a really fun time. the city was massive and there was so much to do, although a little more geographical variety a la SA would have been nice (GTA V scratched that itch though).

the driving wasn't bad once you got used to it, and the gunplay/physics was probably my favorite of all the GTAs.

the story was just as, if not more, engrossing as the previous games, and the DLCs were perfect.

Make sure to turn off auto-aim. It improves the game a lot, and that also applies to RDR and GTA V.

Personally I have always enjoyed the driving physics in that game, it really feels like they designed everything around actually using analog controls. I think that's where it lost some people, because a lot of people just treat the gas and brake as buttons instead of analog controls with a whole range behind them. When you get good at it, you have so much control. Also the peds physics, while exaggerated, are leaps and bounds beyond the toned down physics in V.

I loved how alive Liberty City felt. Los Santos in V just didn't feel the same for some reason, although I did enjoy the gameplay a lot more.

IV had the best story and physics by far

overall, I think the driving is manageable, but the stickiness of the cover shooting (and some of the shooting mechanics) are a deal breaker for me these days.

with that said, I really enjoyed GTAIV.

Cool. Been thinking of replaying myself with all the recent talk here. Still say it's the best in terms of story, characters, setting, and atmosphere. Liberty City feels more alive. I still remember finally unlocking Algonquin (Manhattan) and driving there for the first time. Felt almost magical at the time. I got excited unlocking each piece of the map so I could explore.

That's a really good way to put it. I also like the driving. I think many of the complaints in general about IV have been exaggerated. Like the friends calling you for instance. People act like it happens every 5 minutes when it's doesn't. The physics and car damage are way better than V's. I loved bashing cars in with a baseball bat and seeing all the dents. Car crashes were more interesting too.

Also, the swingset glitch. :)

I don't want to paint everyone who criticize the driving under one brush, but I think a number of them just forgot you have to use the brakes and you can't do a 90 degree right turn going 60mph. The map being more condensed doesn't help either. Other than that, most people probably just didn't like the more sim like driving (relatively speaking) of IV.

Cause he wanted to drive the cars around.
So we put him in a private free roam online so random players couldn't join. Then we turned cops and weapons off. He basically just drove around.

I actually loved the story and Niko was awesome.

I just hated the moment to moment gameplay. I mean, it was still a lot of fun but I hated it compared to 3/VC/SA. Which was my frame of reference at the time.

I really despised the controls, again within context. They were objectively good but not what I wanted from a GTA game.

GTA IV was such a stripped down bare bones game after VC and SA, there was so little to actually do and so little to spend money on.

The expansions were much better but GTA V is when the fun, the customization, and having things to do post main story came back.

I just remember being incredibly bored with the game honestly. I don't remember anything specific about the gameplay of driving I disliked. I do remember it having the first instance of R*'s love of putting in tedious annoying details in the name of muh realizm though. It genuinely galled me that it had a fucking toll road that would give you a wanted level if you just drove through it.

And for all the praise of the story, I just didn't like it. I didn't give a shit about Dimitri and was fuckin' mystified that he ended up being the main antagonist. The themes and story it wanted to tell was completely at odds with the gameplay. I remember one of the dates had Niko talk about his time as a child soldier and an admittedly well written and well delivered line: "It ruined me." Not said sadly, not said angrily, just said as a statement of fact. And it was beautiful and poignant and kind of ruined because the hood of my car was crumpled from the half dozen pedestrians I'd run down on the way to the diner.
