I am a teacher and work in the elementary building. There was an opening in the spring for a job in the middle school. Basically everybody assumed if I applied I would get it, like no interview needed. Well the principal ended up giving it to a friend of theirs even though I was better qualified and had better recommendations from people at both buildings. Basically wasted my time. So I was pretty pissed off. It seems like nobody likes that principal so I wasn't going to apply for another job until they were gone.
Well they just called and said teachers moved around so that job is now open again and it's mine if I want it.
There are pros and cons for taking it so now I don't know what to do.

It's not really personal beef.
It's between working for a principal I know and get along with vs one who people apparently don't like working for that much.

Giving jobs to friends is pretty bad.

Reminded me of something, a relative of someone who works at a housing association got a house under the same HA, now tell me how unfair that is, surely that's illegal.

Plus they put up no smoking signs at the entrance to our building but surely they'd have to notify you first?

The main reason I want the other job is because of the schedule. I am a coach for middle school and high school and right now working at the elementary I get out after them so it messes up practice time.
Hypothetically I probably wouldn't have to interact with the principal that much, but you never know.

Two thoughts:

A) Yeah this unfortunately happens a lot (I mean everywhere too) in school districts. I know a lot of people from paras to teachers who work in them and openings often have someone in mind already unless they're real desperate

B) Idk, how much more are you making at the new place? A good admin and environment can make or break teachers from what I've seen. My ex and a friend of ours started teaching at roughly the same time in two different schools, one with a great principal and faculty community and one with a really toxic one, and you can probably guess which one only lasted half a year. But you're a teacher already so you probably know how that goes

Clearly most posters are not teachers. (Ask for more moneylol!)

And a principal is not just any boss. It really is important to have good rapport. But the schedule thing is important.

What do/would you teach?

Right now I teach 4/5 Social Studies/Science.
The job offer is for 6/7 Social Studies.

So the first year would be rough cause I would have to come up with all new lesson plans.

First year will be crazy because you are essentially starting all over.

Personally, I'd much rather teach 6/7 than 4/5. Additionally, I'm more likely to have other male co-workers in the middle school than in the elementary school.

If it is a better building / people and you think you will do it for a long time, go for it if that's the age group you want to teach. Principals will come and go, so get into the position you want to be at.

Women tend to be wary around male coworkers, which can be a strain on said male coworkers. It's not really anyone's fault, women have unfortunately plausible reason to be wary, even if the guy isn't bad at all.

I've gone back and forth both ways on this in the last few hours.
I hate making important decisions.
There are pros and cons for both jobs, and to be honest, there probably isn't a wrong choice either way, which probably makes it hard to decide.

In education, though, the teachers will usually outlast the administration, so it makes sense to take the job you want at the building you want. Even if the Administrator was great, they probably won't be there for many years.

It has to do with retirement and pay scale structure. Most buildings keep an administrator for 3-5 years or so. Administrators are typically former teachers looking to pad their final years in order to up their retirement payout.

Apparently the administrator that I don't like applied for jobs at other schools over the summer, so who knows how long he'll even be around.

They internally posted the opening this morning, so now my phone is blowing up with people asking me if I'm taking it or not.
