If anything it is probably the opposite.

European countries (primarily Germany, who's military was mostly "borrowed" from America) are expanding their military spending, which means the American military will actually shrink as a result.

Which is probably for the better. Geographically we are in a pretty safe position and don't need even 1/3 of the military we currently have.

Ironically, I want Canada to have an Amphibious Assault Ship - it would be very useful for patrolling the Arctic Archipelago... but our gov things that it's more important to have more underpowered missile defense instead

Ehm... depending on how that would play out, that could actually be extremely bad for everyone including the USA. Don't forget how many nukes Russia has. If, for example, Russia was so devastated that it ended up fracturing, it would mean a large number of nukes among multiple nations instead of one. That would... really suck.

Yep. The parties are dumb and lost in identity versus value, or division versus bringing perspective and viewpoints to the table.

A healthy conversation: "OK, so this things sucks. Can we change it? Should we change it? How?"

The conversation in this country, on a good day: "We're not doing anything because you're just a [insert alignment here]." (Meanwhile people in charge just make money keeping it how it is)
