DeSantis is garbage, but "election police" sounds like it's only as sinister as you want it to be

Like a lot of the things Desantis and the GOP in Florida are doing, this will also backfire. They spent the entire scheduled legislative session fighting against a pretend woke mob and passed bills that will lead to problems they didnt think about like the guy that is now trying to get the Bible banned in schools for violating one of the new laws, or the state being on the hook for Disneys $2b debt.

The election police will find more evidence of fraud committed by the GOP than the left because that is where voter fraud is happening. The GOP literally ran a fake candidate with a similar name as a democrat to win in election. Several boomer righties in the Villages have been caught violating voting laws.

This is the guy who stooped so low as to sue school districts and threaten to take away their funding for trying to enforce mask mandates. He has long since waved the right to being given benefit of the doubt.

The law creates an Office of Election Crimes and Security under the Florida Department of State to review fraud allegations and conduct preliminary investigations. DeSantis is required to appoint a group of special officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who would be tasked with pursuing the election law violations.

The law also increases penalties for the collection of completed ballots by a third party, often referred to as ballot harvesting, to a felony. It raises fines for certain election law violations and requires that election supervisors perform voter list maintenance on a more frequent basis.

We seem to be at an impasse then, because your refusal to consider the likelihood of an abuse of power by a man who has routinely abused his power is just as worthless as the conclusions to which we are apparently jumping.

It makes more sense when you realize that DeathSantis' entire motivation is to earn himself clout on the national stage. He does not give two shits about Florida, the people in it, or what a mess he's going to leave us.

DeSantis' action follows a March 31 court ruling that found several aspects of an earlier Florida election law passed in 2021 were unconstitutional and improperly targeted Black voters. In that ruling, federal Judge Mark Walker also barred the state from making any future election rule changes that are similar to the provisions he struck down.

The new Florida law also increases penalties for violating Florida election laws. It makes it a felony to collect and submit more than two vote-by-mail ballots on behalf of other voters. It previously was a misdemeanor to do so. It also increases the fine from $1,000 to $50,000 on organizations that violate voter registration laws.
Cecile Scoon, the president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, called the new $50,000 fine a "direct threat" to her organization.
"When you couple the increased fines with the new election investigators, it doesn't give you a warm or cozy feeling," she told CNN in March as state lawmakers debated the measure.
The new law also extends an existing ban on private donations to include "the cost of any litigation related to election administration." Critics say that will cut off free legal assistance to election officials, who could face additional scrutiny under the new law.

Desantis and his party have done nothing to earn the benefit of the doubt you are giving them, and everything to garner the distrust you're dismissing offhand ITT

it still seems like there is a lot that is up to interpretation

• has a lengthy recent history of trying to dilute and deter black votes
• since 2016 has railed against voter fraud without any evidence that it exists as a significant problem
• has denied the reality that Donald Trump lost in 2020 and has since undertaken efforts to harass and replace the election officials who certified results in key states

Honestly this topic is the first I've heard of it, so I don't presume to know the how's or why's. That was what my initial post was about, and I still think it only sounds as sinister as people want it to.
