Like a lot of the things Desantis and the GOP in Florida are doing, this will also backfire. They spent the entire scheduled legislative session fighting against a pretend woke mob and passed bills that will lead to problems they didnt think about like the guy that is now trying to get the Bible banned in schools for violating one of the new laws, or the state being on the hook for Disneys $2b debt.

The election police will find more evidence of fraud committed by the GOP than the left because that is where voter fraud is happening. The GOP literally ran a fake candidate with a similar name as a democrat to win in election. Several boomer righties in the Villages have been caught violating voting laws.

It makes more sense when you realize that DeathSantis' entire motivation is to earn himself clout on the national stage. He does not give two shits about Florida, the people in it, or what a mess he's going to leave us.

The law creates an Office of Election Crimes and Security under the Florida Department of State to review fraud allegations and conduct preliminary investigations. DeSantis is required to appoint a group of special officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who would be tasked with pursuing the election law violations.

The law also increases penalties for the collection of completed ballots by a third party, often referred to as ballot harvesting, to a felony. It raises fines for certain election law violations and requires that election supervisors perform voter list maintenance on a more frequent basis.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/desantis-florida-election-police-force-bill/

IMO the law itself doesn't seem to egregious on the surface, but it is basically political theater to rile up the far-right base and throw them a bone. it also serves to fuel the rising "distrust" in the electoral process favored by the GOP (so they can cheat and claim fraud every time they lose going forward)

We seem to be at an impasse then, because your refusal to consider the likelihood of an abuse of power by a man who has routinely abused his power is just as worthless as the conclusions to which we are apparently jumping.

Again if you have actual info to share then do it, but literally all you're doing is jumping to conclusions
We have more than enough available info to reach conclusions:

1: This is a solution in search of a problem, as has been the case with every single anti-voter fraud effort from the GOP since 2016, all of which have turned up nothing or less than nothing.
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/11/kris-kobach-and-search-mythical-voter-fraud/617069/

2: This comes in the wake of not only those efforts, but Florida's own election reform, which was overturned by a federal judge for discriminating against black voters:
https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/25/politics/desantis-florida-election-bill-signing/index.html
DeSantis' action follows a March 31 court ruling that found several aspects of an earlier Florida election law passed in 2021 were unconstitutional and improperly targeted Black voters. In that ruling, federal Judge Mark Walker also barred the state from making any future election rule changes that are similar to the provisions he struck down.

3: The text of the law will make it harder for pro-voting rights groups and election officials to do their jobs without fear of reprisal
The new Florida law also increases penalties for violating Florida election laws. It makes it a felony to collect and submit more than two vote-by-mail ballots on behalf of other voters. It previously was a misdemeanor to do so. It also increases the fine from $1,000 to $50,000 on organizations that violate voter registration laws.
Cecile Scoon, the president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, called the new $50,000 fine a "direct threat" to her organization.
"When you couple the increased fines with the new election investigators, it doesn't give you a warm or cozy feeling," she told CNN in March as state lawmakers debated the measure.
The new law also extends an existing ban on private donations to include "the cost of any litigation related to election administration." Critics say that will cut off free legal assistance to election officials, who could face additional scrutiny under the new law.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/25/politics/florida-republicans-elections-bar-free-legal-help/index.html
Legislation recently approved in Florida would cut off free legal assistance to election officials -- alarming legal advocates who have worked to defend election workers from a barrage of threats, harassment and punishing new laws.
The bill, which Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature passed this month and GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign, would extend an existing ban on private donations to help run elections to include "the cost of any litigation related to election administration." Critics say that provision amounts to a ban on pro-bono legal help for election officials.
...
"Due process is a cornerstone of our democracy," said David Becker, a former Justice Department official who helps oversee the Election Official Legal Defense Network. The network, launched last September, connects election officials with free legal assistance.
"The idea that you could be criminally targeted for prosecution but not represented by a lawyer who you chose, that you like, that is willing to represent you, pro bono -- that's blatantly un-American by any measure," Becker told CNN.

Desantis and his party have done nothing to earn the benefit of the doubt you are giving them, and everything to garner the distrust you're dismissing offhand ITT

Given the rather sordid history of things like "election police", why do you feel the conclusion is "being jumped" too? When the back and forth with Disney started, a similar prediction was made about the state removing Disney World's protected status (given DeSantis past abuses of power/tendency to throw his weight around) which was also met with accusations of "fear mongering", yet here we are.

What Antifar said. Also, you're trying to have your cake and eat it too by painting yourself as wisely considering all possible outcomes, but painting everyone else as jumping to definitive conclusions. Finally, please consider how it reflects upon you to be so casually throwing around the word 'fearmongering' at this point in time, because many people have good reason to be afraid.

This bill also prohibits ranked-choice voting in Florida, which everyone apparently missed.

https://www.wptv.com/news/state/florida-bans-ranked-choice-voting-in-new-election-law

Basically forcing the FPTP 2 party system to continue dominating, which will then be presented as a lesser evil compromise as we dive further into ratchet effect politics.

I would be very curious to know what your interpretation of the facts at hand is. Why do you think the Republican Party, which
  • has a lengthy recent history of trying to dilute and deter black votes
  • since 2016 has railed against voter fraud without any evidence that it exists as a significant problem
  • has denied the reality that Donald Trump lost in 2020 and has since undertaken efforts to harass and replace the election officials who certified results in key states
is looking to implement "election police," heighten the punishments on people who collect mail-in ballots for others, increase fines for election-related violations, and prevent election officials from receiving free legal aid?
