I'm an author with a simple Wordpress website that exists mainly to direct readers to my horror novels and my mailing list. Basically my website is a digital business card, no ecommerce/store or anything fancy.

In 2019 I bought a 3-year hosting plan with HostGator for around $90. I liked HostGator, but the renewal costs are more than I'm willing to spend.

Considering the simplicity of my website, what host would be the best/cheapest option for me?

Right now I'm leaning toward DreamHost's "WordPress Basic" plan:

https://www.dreamhost.com/wordpress/shared-wp-hosting/

Dreamhost offers:
  • Free domain name renewal (saves me $18)
  • Free domain protection (some other hosts charge $10/year)
  • Free Automated WordPress Migrations (I want the migration to be as painless as possible)
  • $3/month DreamShield Protection add-on that's a Sitelock sort of thing (Do I need this?)
  • $5/month SEO toolkit (no thanks)

A three-year plan comes out to $94 without add-ons.

I'm about to pull the trigger on this, but I wondered if you guys have any insight. I've heard good things about Hostinger, iPage, BlueHost, and other hosting services. Any advice would rock--thanks!

Have you looked at Namecheap? It looks like they have some of the same options, plus they have backups.

I haven't used it personally but my Web Architecture professor has recommended BlueHost. He's been at it a long time and does work for a lot of clients so it seems reputable

Seems like a popular choice. Only downside is that they basically force you to take the 1-year plan with the way the pricing is structured.

I use Bluehost for my sites and I have not been impressed. I will probably switch when my contract is up.

Did you pay $0.99/month? It's $1.99/month now, which is a bummer.
