There's a brand in Australia and maybe NZ called Mother, I get the sugar free version because it's just as tangy as the regular one with more of a watery complexion. It doesn't leave this sticky, gunky texture in your mouth.

Years ago, well over 10 years, they aired this commercial on TV that got banned for graphic violence. I honestly still think it's one of the better ads of my later childhood:

Nah that's how Jager and red bull tastes. Granted I don't mind a Jager red bull from time to time, when I'm not worried my heart's gonna explode in my chest like a hand grenade.

There could be a difference between American Monster and Australian Monster, if the Aussie one uses cane sugar instead of HFCS. Compared to my usual drink, the aforementioned Mother, it's got a really weird flowery, powdery taste that reminds me a lot of the same effect as it pertains to gin.

Mind you, I like gin because it's a very sharp, tangy drink when you have it with tonic. But whereas I'd say Red Bull and other good energy drinks have a solid flavor and a sharp punch in their flavor, similar to what I like in A tonic water, stuff like Rockstar and Monster really fall short of the mark.

It reminds me of gin, which has kind of a lavendery sort of smell and taste. It's not the whole flavor, but there's a deep undercurrent of it and it's really noticeable compared to the more tart energy drinks I like.
