When they do it. Will the progressives be grateful?
Absolutely not.
They'll just go back to complaining that $50,000 wasn't forgiven for everyone. So we can transfer close to a trillion dollars of wealth to the top 1/3 of income earners in the country.
Funnily enough that type of blanket forgiveness is unpopular with the majority of the electorate.
So is it worth banking on the votes of a demographic that couldn't turn up to vote Sanders in vs the other demographics who actually vote in elections and might get rather bent out of shape with these measures.

Exactly.
Don't do it or do do it.
It doesn't matter to progressives they"ll never vote Biden in the general or even bother to turn up in the mid terms for the Dems.
Why risk alienating your reliable voter base to try and appease a minority demographic that hates you and won't vote for you anyway.

Still waiting for that $10,000 payment towards my loans that Biden kept talking about too.

Also take away interest from federal loans.

You mean the 46 million people out of 328 million should have $1.6 trillion of debt forgiven.
You want to explain how giving a massive tax payer funded boost to 18% of the population paid for mainly by the other 82% is in the best interests of the population as a whole?
The 46 million BTW who are overwhelmingly going to be in the top 1/3 of income earners for the rest of their lives?
I have no problem with zeroing out interest payments and partial debt forgiveness on a means tested basis. But blanket forgiveness is a non starter and politically damaging as fuck.

If you weren't using the moratorium as an opportunity to beat the hell out your loans while interest wasn't accumulating, you did it wrong.

Forgiveness was never going to happen, and if it did, you'd barely miss qualifying for it anyway.

These articles do a good job, imo, of laying out the rationale
https://theappeal.org/the-lab/research/the-case-for-cancelling-student-debt/
Student debt should be cancelled because borrowers havent realized the income gains that would enable them to pay it off, the burden of student debt weighs especially heavily on the historically marginalized, and a good deal if not a majority of outstanding student debt isnt going to be repaid anyway. Why should the government grind pointless payments out of its borrowers for the next many decades?

Student loan forgiveness that isn't explicitly tied to legislation to address the underlying causes is just a giant waste of everybody's time. At best you've picked an arbitrary slice of the population to give free money to and then the very next year there will be a whole new contingent of people with loans that are just as big. At worst it does that, but also scuttles any attempt to actually deal with University costs for another decade or more as people push back on bills using the excuse that they already paid people.

Until like 20 years ago it would file bankruptcy and get them wiped. But thanks to Biden you can't do that anymore.

Literally it was away out of a them for most of the time they existed. Now it is not , when the price of schools have gone like 10 fold

They've been put in forbearance, which means they don't get interest and they're not owed, but you can continue to pay them off if you want to with any amount. At least if they're federal loans.

Yes, ideally some policy to curb tuition costs would go hand in hand with debt relief for the people who already got scammed

Zero out interest indefinitely.
Shift aid from loans to straight-up grants.
Tighten down loan limits.
Nudge students into degrees that are actually needed.
Remind everyone that the Peace Corps exists, and maybe add several more "do this shit and we'll cancel your loans" service programs.

If we go down the grant route then the qualifying criteria needs to be massively raised if the government and taxpayers are going to be paying directly.

You've already seen that, though. The covid relief bill was twice as big as the biggest stimulus that had ever been passed in the history of the country. The biggest one before that was Obama's $800 billion investment bill. The roughly 1 trillion dollar infrastructure bill that was recently passed sits roughly in between but I'm not counting it because it isn't a relief bill.

Unless you address the underlying causes, throwing bigger and bigger checks at people isn't going to fix anything. We need to stop thinking that the solution to these problems is to pass an unbelievably large bill that just throws money at people once so we can pat ourselves on the back. It's highly destructive and actively making things worse.

There's always the option of yet another standardized test (or even just the ol' ASVAB), to see who's potentially good at what, then throw grants at poor kids to go into that.
