A few years ago in NYC, a college girl was in a park at night and a group of boys attacked her. She got stabbed and died. They are now facing their punishments

hard to feel sympathy for them, despite being 14. You should know right from wrong at that age. I mean it sucks their life is ruined because 2gst they did.

I'd they really felt remorseful and turned their life around, I would be open to bringing them back. I do believe in second chances/rehabilitation depending on the situation.

I mean stabbing someone is pretty cut and dry, you probably don't want to just do that to another person without due cause.

I'm okay for letting him out when he's 30. Not before that.

Tbh Im of the mind now that 14 is still pretty firmly a child, and its largely on the parenting (and society) at that point

this is a kid that probably grew up in poverty without being taught about consequences etc

i know the crime here is heinous, but I dont think society gains anything by taking this child and essentially guaranteeing hes going to be in and out of the prison system the rest of his life

You feel bad and then look at that girls picture and remember they brutally murdered an innocent young person

Yes fucking really. I'm wondering why this guy felt the need to point out her looks as if it'd be less tragic if she wasn't beautiful.

I can see the argument for the sentences given to the others who didnt do the actual stabbing. But the guy who did the actual stabbing should spend the rest of their life in prison. As others have said, nothing to be gained by ever letting them out just so they can commit another crime. Let them rot.

youre putting your own expectation of experience on someone else. Im not saying its the parents fault, but consider the type of environment a child has to grow up in to feel they have to commit armed robbery by age 14

Why bother talking about rehabilitative Justice in America when we can just create another lifetime career criminal

Look, Im not saying a 14 year old doesnt at a base level know its wrong to kill someone, and Im not saying there should be no punishment

Im just pushing back against the visceral response of let this piece of shit rot in jail or whatever.

cant we summon an ounce of empathy for a child, who probably grew up in poverty surrounded by crime, who by age 14 was committing armed robbery. Do you people know 14 year olds? Do you remember being one yourself? You dont have a fully formed brain at that age, youre not making good decisions (although obviously most poor decisions by 14 year olds dont end in a killing). He probably didnt ever even plan on using the knife but reacted when the person fought back (which to be clear she had every right to do when being robbed). This was a child without a good support system reacting to the environment they were being raised in

all Im saying is this is tragic all around; and with our legal system theyll be in the system for life for something they did as a child (which should never be a goal of the prison system)

Do you also feel the same about child molesters? They also have a strong redividism rate that's not helped by their long sentences or the prison violence they're subjected to. A lot of them were also abused when they were a kid meaning they weren't properly developed

just fyi most of these are 12-14 year sentences, not life in prison as many in this topic are advocating

I meant the killer is older now than when he killed his victim

No matter the severity of a crime the defendant can plea insanity. I think it is inconsistent to try a child as an adult because of the severity.
