Probably that king from the book of Daniel getting turned into an animal. That scared me as a kid. I forget if it was in the Bible, another mythical book, or if it was just an animation that I saw because it was definitely animated as a cartoon

The Koreans got the fast zombies on point. Resident Evil games, particularly REmake2, does the slow zombies best imo.

Ghost - The Woman In Black, the old television movie from the 80s. There are better ghost story movies overall, but this one is the scariest. Ghost stories are probably the scariest sub-genre of horror, though, and I'm almost certainly forgetting something

Vampire - Vampyr, 1932. I don't really find vampires to be scary, but this movie gets the nod because the actress who plays the vampire is really intimidating in a very realistic way, and the movie has this great way of marrying the realistic with the otherworldly. It's my favorite horror movie.

Zombie - Zombie Flesh Eaters. It's all in the makeup, and the grue. You won't find a more palpably disgusting and believable portrayal of rotting corpses coming to life and impaling your eyeball on broken wood.

Werewolf - An American Werewolf in London, obviously.

Hanna Barbera The Greatest Adventure stories from the Bible.

I know they did the Daniel story, I would guess that's what you're thinking of.

Bloodborne

Beasts fulfill all 4 requirements simultaneously. They're undead werewolves who feed on blood & have an aversion to the church (exactly like vampires, who are represented more or less by Cainhurst's Vilebloods) ~But, the Beasts are also treated as phantoms, souls from the abyss who were cursed with a backwards evolution, popping up now and again throughout history, and we see that their true nature lacks a corporeal form. Arguably the ultimate Beasts, like the Watchdog of the Old Lords, or Ludwig, are very mystical & clearly lost their real body a long time ago. They are often Hunters, much like the player, who is afflicted with part of the curse (Beasthood)

Absolutely the best lycanthropy ive seen in a large work of fiction

Ghost - The Shining (Not sure if it counts, but the ghosts in the movie were awesome because they looked like normal people)

Vampire - Fright Night (1985) (not really a fan of vampires, but this scared me as a kid)

Zombie - Walking Dead

Werewolf - An American Werewolf in London

Great post.

I swear if they ever do a miniseries or movie about that universe, I'd want them to have you on board to keep things on track.

Ghost - Bill Wilkins from the Conjuring 2. He has everything going in the scare department from a creepy look and unsettling atmosphere around his place of death to cheap jump scares that work. Hes just great. It also helps that the movie draws from a series of real events (the people in the story were real, not that ghosts are real)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxONThU1mmU

Vampire - These are not really super scary in any medium that i can think of. OG Nosferatu looks the most disturbing i suppose.

Zombie - The most scary are the kid zombies IMO. Not only are they tragic, but they are the kind that can easily get up on you and maul you because you fall for their innocence. The most scary one to me is Ellie from the 2019 Pet Sematary. More technically a Wendigo but its zombie enough to count. Imagine having your sweet baby die only to have a miracle happen and she comes back. Except shes different and is a fucked up, evil walking corpse that is stitched together.

Werewolves - Just like vampires, i have never seen one as being scary.

I've never seen a werewolf be scary. They're pretty goofy.

Aside from a few exceptions, vampires are often depicted as suave, attractive people.

Ghosts? Laugh if you want, but The Entity scared the crap out of me as a kid.

I thought the moving thing in House on Haunted Hill remake was creepy.

Oh! Stephen Gammel's artwork from Scary Stories is definitely nightmare fuel. Even though the stories were goofy.

I like the vampires from 30 Days of Night, because they're actually depicted as pretty ghastly, predatory monsters.

Walking Dead did a great job with their zombies, until they eventually become background set pieces.

Return of the Living Dead has scary zombies, in the sense that they have human intelligence and ability and are almost completely unkillable. Only burning them to ash works, but that just makes the infection airborne.

Like I edited my post, I think zombies were done well in Walking Dead, before they became a background inconvenience to the heroes.

And Return of the Living Dead had pretty scary zombies, in the sense that they are intelligent, capable, and near indestructible.

As far as werewolves, I think of American Werewolf in London first. Then maybe Dog Soldiers or The Howling.

Honestly the scariest werewolf Ive seen in a movie was probably the one in The Cabin in The Woods, and you only see it for like 3 seconds >_>
