I've been going around capturing all of the Marine/Gear spawn points and conquering all of the enemy strongholds... The problem is that the game loses so much structure after the first two "Classic Halo" missions that it winds up feeling aimless. I've already maxed out my shields and grappling hook despite not even progressing very far into the campaign proper. Once I figured out that you can basically cheese your way across the entire open world map by abusing the Rank 3 Grappling Hook (40% CD reduction) and capture every outpost / collect every upgrade at the very beginning of the game, it dawned on me that this really is basically Halo Far Cry. Hopefully that changes once I keep progressing in the campaign.

What bothers me is that "open world fatigue" was a thing prior to the launch of last gen consoles. They're all the same damn structure, and open world games fundamentally lack the nuance and smart set design of a well-crafted level-based shooter like Halo: CE and Half-Life 2.

Both. GamePass ftw.

I can get ~90-100fps at 1080p on my laptop
And at home, 60fps at 4K on Series X.

The good life.

Then... don't do it? I understand that you can cheese it, but that's the point of open world games, the freedom, you can restrict yourself an up the difficulty by taking a more challenging route just as easily

Yeah, I think the open world actually works perfectly with Halo's physics and emergent gameplay. And the few story missions I've played on the ring so far have felt pretty classic Halo.

I'll reserve my judgement on the campaign until I finish it. It's been fun so far though, even with the open world elements.

The main thing that bothers me about the campaign is that it's basically "dlc", while the multiplayer is the main game. Which means, multiplayer's anti-cheat detection always runs when you launch the game, even when you're only playing the campaign. It's going to make modding the game harder and pretty much prevents any memory scanners, like cheat engine.

It took me about 7 hours just to complete all the objectives on the first island you are on, I am just just starting the second island and it seems even bigger than the first. Just about to start the 4th campaign mission.

Typical Halo campaigns are like 7 hours total, this is a massive improvement

IIRC Halo MCC has two versions you can install, one without the anticheat so you can mod. Hopefully they do something like that with Infinite, modding this has so much potential

Yeah. Its not like a super huge world and its mostly the same biome until they add expansions, but its still a pretty good size and theres lots of collectibles and hidden areas to explore

I would rather have 7 hours of a quality scripted campaign than 50 hours of generic open world stuff

Yeah, unfortunately, there's no co-op for the campaign. 343 has said we won't get it until after season 1 ends, which means May 2022 at the earliest.

Co op for the campaign would be epic, unfortunate they couldn't have it at launch. I can see how it would be extremely difficult to implement though in the open world fighting different enemies/triggering objectives on opposite sides of the map, unless you force the players to remain close to each other.

I have had a blast exploring the open world so far, it reminds me of Breath of the Wild, where the world is just packed full of hidden stuff to do. And with the grapple hook, just like BotW, you can pretty much go anywhere and climb anything you want. Master Chief is pretty much Spider Man with that thing.

One of my favorite things to do in Halo 1 and 2 though was getting out of the maps and exploring all of the huge open areas that were out of bounds and finding secrets and easter eggs. Infinite is just like that except this time it was put in the game on purpose.

I love the open world aspect personally. Corridor shooters feel really outdated, now. There's only so many ways you can spin the "Enter room, shoot all bad guys, get new gun/ammo" gameplay loop when it's repeated back to back to back. I stopped playing fps games because of it.

Breaking it up with exploration and the ability to choose what you do next really helps keep it from getting repetitive to me. I really don't i'd be enjoying Infinite without it.

I'm enjoying the open world so far, but it's certainly something I can see many people disliking. At the end of the day I can't really say it's any different than the typical open world game these days. But for me, it's more Halo, and I guess that's really all that matters.

My only issue is apparently some of it is gated off. I just tried to get to a new FOB with my grapple and it told me I was out of bounds. That part kind of sucked.
