poor little guy was like half paralyzed from some poison and was really struggling to walk. i felt like i had to just put it out of its misery so i got a shovel and stood over it for a good two minutes, preparing to do what i must. finally just bit the bullet and swung downward, thankfully ending the suffering in one blow.

but i feel so f'ing awful for both putting down the poison and then for killing the little thing :(

That's why you shouldn't use poison/glue traps for rodents. You "feel" better about it but all you're doing is inflicting needless pain and suffering on a creature so you don't have to look at its body.

Just get a spring loaded mousetrap that kills instantly.

Eh fuck em. I don't feel bad about killing rats or mice because those fuckers will reproduce like crazy if you don't.

i will go with these next time for sure, especially after witnessing the results of the poison. i mean, i read the description and knew it killed by "slowly paralyzing the victim" but i guess it didn't really hit me until i saw it.

when i was at Lowe's looking for traps etc i only saw spring traps for mice, but not for rats. will the "mice" ones work or would they be too small?

this was only in the garage, not inside my actual house. yet.

alright, thanks.

im also a bit hesitant to use spring traps because i have dogs and they go out in the garage every time we go someplace in the car. not sure where i could place a spring trap so they wouldn't be at risk because presumably, any bait to attract the rats would attract my doggos. anyone have ideas there?

IIRC there are "boxed in" spring traps that are only large enough to fit rodents so your dogs would be okay.

More generally, though, spring traps work best wedged somewhere like behind furniture so that they can't approach the bait from the side, which will also protect the dogs.

oh, cool. the poison trap i had was designed in a similar way where the box has a U-shaped tunnel inside with an opening on one side and the poison on the other.

thanks!

Put them under shelves, tool boxes etc.

The dogs really shouldnt be able to fit most places the rats would normally go unless you have chihuahuas.

FYI found one on amazon. I'm sure there are other brands, though:

Hmmm. Maybe try putting the trap in something like a shoebox with a hole in it? Or maybe a plastic box with a hole cut in it if there's a chance the dog could open the box.

don't really have those options in my garage. no shelves. i hang everything on hooks w/pegboard and the rest just sits on the floor. but i can probably arrange some stuff in a way to 'hide' the trap in a corner or something.

vermin with a personality and feelings and emotions. it looked so scared. it was so hard to slam that shovel down but i knew i had to.

and yes, i feel bad when i have to kill bugs (not nearly as bad as this tho). which is very rare but sometimes i will. im the kinda dude who normally puts a bug outside instead of killing it

I know the pain. I remember being in middle school and we had a few rats inside the house (only lasted a couple weeks and I forget how we got rid of them). One of them ended up in our kitchen sink and he was sooo scared. Like hyperventilating and shit. I think my mom told me to kill it or get rid of it or something. I had a broom and I was about to stab it with the sharp end but I couldn't do it. When I brought the broom close to him, he flinched. That on top of already hyperventilating...I just couldn't do it man. A few seconds later he got up and ran away. I don't even remember how he got in the sink in the first place.

I have some weird drainage holes in my basement. One time one of my kids had moved a cover and a rat got in the basement. My daughter pointed to it and asked whats that. I took a crowbar and just straight up hit it in the head. I felt no remorse but I just didnt want that thing near my kids.

I've had to do it before. To a mother rat and its baby. Felt bad but kept telling myself that animals and humans kill each other throughout time, and this is just one of those instances. I don't know if that was a good excuse or not but that's what I kept thinking.

I managed to kill the mother in one blow to the neck with the shovel, the baby however took longer which made me feel even more shitty tbh.
