On June 1, 2018, Samuel Scott Jr.'s 2006 black Jeep Compass was stolen from outside his aunt's house in Buena Vista.

It's hard to imagine how the 44-year-old's day could get any worse. But roughly half an hour after making a 911 call, Scott was taken away in handcuffs by the Miami Police Department (MPD) officers he had called to report the theft and help get his car back.

Why? Officers believed Scott was the perpetrator of the crime, not the victim.

"Im telling you, you guys have the wrong guy," Scott a Black man wearing a dark-colored shirt over a white undershirt at the time can be seen telling an officer in body-worn camera footage obtained by New Times.

"The description of the guy who took off in your car is just like yours," the officer responds.

"But thats half of Miami," Scott says.

A few minutes later, Scott laughs to himself: "I mean, why would I call the police?"

Scott was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, false reporting of a crime, failure to carry a concealed-weapon license, and possession of marijuana charges that were eventually dropped by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. In his mugshot, Scott flashed a toothy grin.

I would be so pissed off if this happened to me.

I mean, a black man reporting a black car stolen. That's two counts of black!

Clearly something suspicious. Obviously the officers had no choice but to arrest the one who reported it.

The car was involved in an accident while running from the police....which is probably why they thought he would make a false report that it was stolen.

Would depend on the who the white guy is and and whether or not he fit the description of the guy seen driving the car.

Both the owner and the suspect were bald heavy set black guys wearing white tank tops and the officer who responded to the call said he was sweating as if he'd been running.

The cops were wrong, but "they arrested him just because he was black" is kind of a dumb take.

More likely he's just a fat guy in Miami. Either way cops aren't omniscient. They are piecing together context clues to figure out what is going on.

The "But that's half of Miami" line was pretty funny. At least he seems to be in fairly good spirits considering he had to go through all that.

The problem is the cops do it so much, its tough to cut em slack when its a legit misunderstanding.

It sounds like the car theif (who they mistook the guy for) was the one who fled the scene of an accident?

I'd assume though that the firearm must have been the guy himself - otherwise how would they know whether it was registered or not?

Cops are pigs.

I was with a coworker at the movie theater once and we were kidnapped at gunpoint and the two guys took money out of my bank account via ATM then dropped us off on some side road.

Used a phone at the local Safeway to call the cops, they arrived, were taking our statements, then they got a call that they "found a suspect".

It was some random Black man walking home with a couple bags of groceries, looked *nothing* like the guys that got us. Like wtf.
