When thinking about the stories of all kinds of media: movies, games, books, etc.

Personally, i lean towards fantasy. of course there are series like star wars and final fantasy which kinda teeter on both, but ultimately which on are you for?

Sci-fi.

Always thought it more interesting than the Into the Woods type of stories

Though books like Name of the Wind are really good.

generally speaking, I prefer sci-fi.

whether it's space traveling, cyberpunk, dystopias, etc., it feels like there's a lot of range.

I know that fantasy can be equally varied, but because medieval fantasy is the most popular sub-genre, it's a lot of what we get, and I'm not much of a fan.

Fantasy, especially in books. I've never been able to get into scifi books. I hated Hyperion.

Fantasy. Most of my favorite sci-fi I feel is sci-fi for fantasy fans, like Red Rising. Except maybe Children of Time which is one of the best books I've read.

I'd say sci-fi. Both are technically limitless but fantasy always seems to be dragged down by ripping off Tolkien or trying their hardest to not rip off Tolkien.

I prefer Sci-fi for TV and movies (voted that in the poll) but prefer fantasy for games I think. Roll playing games and D&D lend themselves better to fantasy in my opinion. And I don't like FPS which a lot of sci-fi games tend to be.

I always thought I hated fantasy, but in reality I just hate medieval fantasy. I just hate anything involving non-human races like elves and trolls, don't like anything that resembles kingdoms and royalty, can't stand stories that take place in the past (or at least the setting makes it look like it's in the past even if it's in the future or another world) and creatures like dragons bore me. I also find that a lot of the time the rules of magic are inconsistent and can be made up as they go along (this spell can be inexplicably stopped with this spell).

I like sci-fi because it generally keeps most of regular rules of physics grounded with the exception of one or two technological things that advance society in a certain way. I feel like sci-fi tends to be more futuristic, which is a cool setting for me in fiction, whereas fantasy tends to focus too much on the past (which as I mentioned, I don't like).

When fantasy tends to take on a more modern take, I find that I enjoy it more. A great example is the movie series The Librarian and the sequel TV series, The Librarians. I'd say that's fantasy but done in a way I enjoy it. It's set in the modern day but still invokes elements of fantasy that I find enjoyable.

But if we are talking overall, I tend to enjoy sci-fi settings much more than fantasy settings in any type of media.

Sci-Fi

I find fantasy tends to fall toward cliche a bit more easily.

Although personally I prefer stories where fantastic things happen in "our" world to either.

My favorite is modern times or post apocalypse. But out of those 2, Fantasy. Sci-fy needs to do a lot more to interest me. Cause it all seems like nonsense off the rip. I'm not saying it is, it just feels that way to me.

Id also take cowboy times over both. Thank RDR2 alone for that lol

Sci fi. I generally dislike most high fantasy stuff with dragons, and orcs and wizards and I also dislike most urban fantasy stories about vampires living in New York or whatever. There are some exceptions though. I guess I like sci fi more because even though its still wacky, a lot of it feels like things that could potentially happen someday.

A lot of what's already been said.
I prefer fantasy for the heightened potential ceiling of (mostly) human characters where with sci-fi it's usually credited to tech.
The typical dragons and castles setup does nothing for me, it needs to at least take all the stereotypes to a new location or ideally get creative. I enjoy a mix of both but sci-fi on its own is rarely very appealing to me.

Can't it be both? The japanese do this kind of thing so well. But when it comes to the west, if it's not medieval based then it's generally not fantasy. Just look at gaming and RPGs.. Western versions of both are also way too caught up in silly hand-wringing over selective "realism" as well.. I don't get me started on the "dark, gritty and tragic" fad. (i.e. edgelord 9 times out of 10)

Depends.

Written media like novels or comics I tend to prefer Sci-Fi.

Visual media like movies and films, I prefer fantasy.

Videogames can be either, don't have a preference. I mean, I love Mass Effect and Warcraft the same for example.

Sci-fi, in general. But my favorite is fantasy contained within a sci-fi universe. Like the feifdoms in Dune, or some of the primitive worlds in 40k.
