This movie is a proper sequel to the original Ghostbusters movies. It captures the nostalgia and humor of the original in a way that the 2016 failed to do.

If you want to discuss details then please use spoiler tags, but mostly I just want to let everyone know that this movies feels like a proper Ghostbusters movie.

It will help to have seen the original, but probably isn't necessary to enjoy this one. It's difficult for me to imagine not knowing the original.

I'm not sure about this. I don't believe there were any direct references to 2 but that doesn't confirm it never happened. Lack of evidence not being evidence of lack, and all that.

I would call it a fitting tribute, but it wasn't particularly somber.

It is not. 2016 Ghostbusters had some okay moments, but imo the humor just wasn't right. This one hits the vibe perfectly. 2016 was more like Bridesmaids with ghosts.

Work at the theater and haven't seen much aside from the ending, and the post-credits scenes (plural!), but a comparison struck me out of the blue a few hours ago.

This is a proper sequel to Ghostbusters from the five minutes I've seen. In tone, in spirit, in comedy, in characters.

The 2016 movie is... anyone remember the MTV Movie Award skits with Jack Black? Like LotR parody and the Spider-Man kiss, and they're sort of funny but not really that great?

The 2016 movie is Jack Black's MTV Movie Award skits stretched out for two hours. With Jack Black as all four Ghostbusters.

It's probably been at least a year or two since I've seen the original, but it was a staple growing up so I was well preferred for any of the references.

*Massive spoilers in ^this^ post and my reply:

Honestly I was a bit surprised that they showed us so much of him at the end. The initial sequence of the movie (before he died) they very carefully shot it so that you never got a good look at him and that seemed to be pretty deliberate. Personally I think I would have been fine if we got Ghost Egon just a tiny bit less than we did. The shot of him bracing Phoebe's arm was a fantastic hair raising moment. Also when the other ghostbusters turned to notice him. I think I would have been okay if that was it, but the amount we got was fine too.

Also the bit where four children decide to, for no reason, put on 30 year old, adult-sized jumpsuits that all fit them almost perfectly.

And a much higher IMDB score. I saw a few critics complain that this isn't a direct sequel to the 2016 one, which is probably a plus for a big part of the audience.

But I'm very much ignoring actual hard spoilers because I do still wanna see it.

That is interesting, but personally I don't need a website to validate how I felt. And this isn't to say the movie is perfect. I have minor nitpicks, but they just pale next to the feeling of watching a "real" Ghostbusters movie after all this time.

Well I won't spoil anything, but other than what was visible in the trailers (Baby Stay-Pufts!) I don't see how this leans into toy marketing in any discernable way. I tagged it just to be safe, but if you've seen the trailers you can click it.

I'm not saying they're always right, but I've never liked a movie that they absolutely thrashed. Except Boyhood, but I think they were reacting to the critical acclaim more than anything.

the monologues and long shots were the best part of the show

honestly they could have gotten rid of the spooky stuff and it still would be a great show as just a commentary on religion

I'll watch the video and see what their thoughts were, but if their main point was just that it leaned into the nostalgia of the original too much then I'm probably just going to disagree on principle that this is necessarily a bad thing.

The movie was not a half-assed cash grab. It introduced new characters that I cared about (Maybe not Trevor and Lucky as much but everyone else, definitely. Particularly Phoebe and Podcast.) The humor was very dry like the original and it all just sort of worked for me. My biggest nitpick was the spoiler tagged response I posted above and it by no means ruined the movie.

jay really disliked it so yeah, it's a pass for me (at least as far as seeing it in theaters goes).

youtube movie reviewers in general are actually pretty mixed on this movie, btw.
