She describes herself as "barely an adult" probably the asari's equivalent of 18 while Shepard is in his 20s

Discuss the ethics of Conmander shepart dating his younger coworkers

She has a doctorate. Children other than Doogie Howser don't have doctorates.

She means other asari consider her barely more than a child because she's still early in her archeology career.

Sure, but since the Asari outlive humans by many years, it makes sense that she studied at a younger equivalent.

If she can kill the head of a shadow organization and take it over then I'm pretty sure she's ready for a relationship

I don't think Liara is actually a subordinate until ME3. In ME1 you just rescue her and she hangs around sharing some information and public mind sex.

Shouldn't it be considered unethical for a commanding officer to date a subordinate, without even getting into unknowable alien consent norms?

Would that really apply to the aliens Shepard recruits though? They aren't part of the Alliance military; they're more like mercenaries (except ones that basically work for free) that can leave at any time if they wanted without being charged for desertion.

Yeah IIRC only Ashley and Kaidan are officially under Shepard's command from the first game.

And pretty much all of 2's are just a ragtag group of misfits

2 is still the best cast though

In terms of actual personalities, sure. But both 1 and 3 does a better job having characters interact with each other and not just Shepard. Even if it's only marginally better in 1 than 2, it's still noticable. The result is that the cast feels more cohesive than these separate characters Shepard just goes round to occasionally have a conversation with in a vacuum.

I only really liked her ME1. Her personality was a lot more relatable to me.

I overall think the characters interactions that are not 1 on 1 is very weak overall in the trilogy. There's characters that I cannot even describe their relationships, it was fun to see some interactions in 3. I feel like the franchise could be a bit better for this.

Most of the romances are pretty unethical.

Well at least innapropriate due to power dymanics and mental state. Think about it.

Liara is barely legal in her race and is facinated by Shepard due to his prothean vison.
Kaidan and Ashley are his comrades and surbordinates.
Tali is barely legal, your subordinate and feels compelled to you because you saved her life twice.
Mornith will kill you. Samara will violate her code to be with you.
Miranda and Boring Jacob are terrorists.
Thane is a mass murderer.
Jack is being held against her will (Well hobson's choice) and has been tortured for years, is completely mentally unstable and suffers from PTSD and attachment issues (you can even intentionally mess with her head and just pump and dump her)
Steve is on the rebound and your subordinate.
Kelly is your subordinate and has PTSD
Allers is a journalist being paid to write reports on you.

Really the only romance that isn't kinda fucked up if you think about it is Garrus. He's there by choice, can leave any time, is not part of the military command structure, is mature and has no real tie forcing him to be your underling or hold you in awe. He's just a bro.

Every other romance would get an ":/ Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh" reaction in the real world.

Imagine your brother comes home one day and starts bragging that he fucked his barely legal subordinate who suffers from PTSD, isn't allowed to quit their job and worships him. While at work.

You'd be so uncomfortable even though it's not illegal.

When's the Krogan romance, huh Bioware?!
IIRC: After doing Grunts quest Edi tells you that Shepard has recieved requests for breeding.

Not sure how that would work but it's an option I guess.
