I was using a program called Stencyl. I managed to get a character and a tilesheet done for an overworld, but I ran into a roadblock trying to get the character moving on an overworld. I don't have a desk to sit this laptop on, so eventually it got too much to juggle on top of everything else and I gave up.

I'm still kinda proud of it, and I want to get to a point where I can get a barebones build up - an overworld map that you can move a character around.

The sprites aren't high art, but the character I made is kinda cute and I'm particularly proud of the tileset, as amateur as it is. I made a little test area with it and while it's far from pretty, it's cohesive enough to flow together.

Here's the test area I made:

Very bright, very basic and crummy. But I did that thing they did in Pokemon Crystal with the flowers, in the top and bottom right of the map, and I like how the roads flow together.

I only got this far in the tileset anyway:

You can see how I wanted to demo the single-tile and multi-tile paths in the test map, with some extender pieces in the tileset to make paths that were more than 2 tiles wide. There's no singular dirt path block though.

They're just MSpaint mock-ups, but I thought I did an okay job given my resources.

Next up is the character I made - I did two sprites, so they would have an idle animation:

The idea is that he'd be moving his arm back and forth as you move around the overworld. Obviously just a quick mock-up, a little game piece to interact with the environment, but he's kinda cute.

I have this whole plot set up about a wizened old knight who lost his family after the king tried to have him killed due to prior clandestine missions carried out in the name of the kingdom, and there's this circus acrobat girl who has a whole plotline, and I was gonna make the main character a silent protagonist but that'd be pretty cliche. I was gonna make the knight bisexual and eventually open a bakery with his prior knight buddy or something - just wanted to make something kinda different and cool storywise, though I don't think I would have reinvented the wheel.

Like don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to toot my own horn here - these are basic-ass MSpaint graphics. But I can't help but feel pretty good about that test map I made. Making something that felt kinda organic, like it flowed together - despite the noticeable gap between grass tiles - was really satisfying. I hope I'm in a position to pursue this sort of thing in 2022, even if it's just some fun silly-buggers project like this.

I've 100%ed Brave Dungeon on Switch my dude, you're preaching to the choir lol. All it needs is a procedurally generated 100 floor challenge dungeon, and it'd be the perfect dungeon crawler.

I didn't actually. I know that Thousand Year Door has a dungeon like that, and I actually beat Via Infinito on FFX2 just last year.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has a few 100 floor dungeons, and a couple that make you start at Level 1.
