Not an expert, but I doubt those character usage agreements are like ones for music/footage/whatever other non-vg originating IP agreements that cause issues.

I'm not a lawyer but with how many times square has re released Kingdom Hearts I doubt they've had to get Disney's approval every single time

A lot of the time, expiring rights are because the games in question are from the early days of the internet before digital distribution was the norm- nobody expected that a publisher would still be directly profiting from a given title in ten or twenty years' time, so they only negotiated time-limited rights which are now expiring. That's less common nowadays when it's assumed that most games will continue to be sold and remastered every generation from now until the heat death of the universe.

yeah usually now when something is going to be limited like that for rights reasons they say so from the very beginning, not just because it's more friendly from an "informing your users" standpoint but also because it compels more people to buy. Those Hatsune Miku songs in Cytus 2 for example

Yeah Tarzan alone would stop KH1 from getting any kind of re release.

I don't think Smash Ultimate's going to be ported to the switch successor if that's what you're asking

I think you'll always be able to get it for the Switch, but pretty sure the next Smash game is going to look a lot different

At this point I feel like Nintendo backed themselves into a corner where can't really top Ultimate. They either have to keep releasing and iterating on it forever like with Skyrim and GTAV, or the next Smash game has to be a full reboot where even Jigglypuff gets cut and everything gets reimagined. Cutting 10+ characters, adding a similar number of new characters pre-DLC, and calling it a day isn't going to cut it.

tbh that's what they're going to do, most likely.

It's going to be like Duty Calls and Madden, only instead of a new coat of paint every year for the price tag of a full game, it's a new game every console. I don't think Nintendo is going to squeeze the udders quite like that but they'll still make a killing because it has "SMASH" on it.

Maybe they'll come up with new ideas - possibly even a 3D plane - for the one AFTER the next one? Can't hurt to take a huge risk of people are wondering if the series will ever feel new again.

Nintendo hasn't re-released a Smash title besides the original, for what it's worth. Might be a long time before Ultimate gets ported.

I doubt it'll be an issue. Buying the characters might be, but people who have bought the characters will likely have the rights to them forever.

Recently, Netflix walked away from their deal with BHVR. Demogoron, Nancy and Steve will no longer be sold. BUT anyone who already bought the characters before November 17th will own them forever. The only thing they're losing is the rights to Hawkins map, and the rights to sell. Also worth noting that BHVR made sure everyone knew this ahead of time, and put the chapter on sale at half price.

I imagine Nintendo, being a much bigger company, has even better licensing deals than that.
