Like its obvious that whoever came up with that spelling and pronunciation combo was just being a smug butthead

The way the British spell certain words drives me crazy. I was in my 20s before I realized that "gaol" was pronounced "jail" and not gah-ole. And I was even older before I figured out that "draught" was supposed to be "draft".

A lot of nautical terms have wacky spelling too. Boatswain (pronounced bosun), leeward (loo'erd), forecastle (foc'sle)

The "ugh" is pronounced "f" like in laugh. Ugh, indeed.

Most of those just look like old words, that kept their old spellings because they are jargon.

Yacht looks right. (normal j sound, which in English tends to get written as y and a chi sound that some/most English speakers refuse to pronounce.)
