I watched it. It's not that scary, but it's really tense and there's a lot of blood (some gore, not a ton except for a couple of surgical scenes about harvesting organs from dead contestants)

The characters get a lot of good and interesting development. I started to care a lot about some of them by episode 3, and even more as it kept going. Also, the games are creative and well-executed. If you liked the first episode at all, I think you'll enjoy the rest.

Not really, no. There's an element of that, but most of it is based on high-stakes children's games. For example, the first episode is called "Red light, green light" and the game in the episode is based on that. I'll leave the rest to your imagination, because it would suck to spoil anything about it.

Did anybody get reminded of Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor while watching Squid Games? The plot is so similar.

I watched it with my girl (her idea, actually) and we both loved it. Watched the first episode dubbed, thought it was a little too silly, and shelved it for a few days. Then she read online about how bad the dub is compared to the original Korean, so we gave it another shot and watched the first episode with the original audio.

It is so. Much. Fucking. Better. We finished it in two sittings after that.

I generally only do subs, exceptions are Jackie Chan; a lot of those actors are doing their own dubs so it's great(huge Jackie fan, my favorite film maker). Been into Korean cinema for almost a decade and I want the actors voices. Glad this is so popular, I'll be able to get her to watch some other stuff too if it's good. She never finished train to Busan even though she liked Alone; she doesn't watch too many movies :(

Without spoiling too much, it *could* do a season 2 if they wanted but if they ended it here, it would still be a satisfying ending

I don't really recommend it to anyone coming from Kaiji, especially if they liked Kaiji primarily for the game element. The games in Squid Game are extremely minor and take a back seat to a more prominent human element. Squid game is also A LOT less philosophically dense than Kaiji. The general core plot, and one episode in particular, is lifted entirely from Kaiji.

The idea is generally less developed and more fantastical in Squid Game, plus losing a game leads to outright death, so it's kinda just suddenly over instantly for almost every character by nature of its structure. Also SG ends on a obvious twist and sequel bait ending that doesn't really do its intrigue any favors.

Hmmm, I don't really want to get invested into a brand new show. Much less one that is going to have giant expectations going forward.

But if the season is worthwhile to check out on it's stand alone merit I'll probably check it out.

I think the writer did intend for it to only be 1 season, but given how wildly successful it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix nudged him to write a 2nd season, which he said he would be open to if he had additional people helping him

Just not in the mood for a survival game story. I've also seen a lot of them and the way they are usually structured gets to me after a while. Build up characters only to kill them in dramatic and sometimes anticlimactic fashion. It's a bit depressing.

None of the characters who get focus are just unceremoniously killed without any time to appreciate what's happening. That's one of Squid Game's main strengths--it really does service to the significant characters. It's always an event when one of the "notable" faces comes to their end.

Even some of the minor ones are at least given relevant sendoffs, like dickhead thug's buddy that lost at marbles, 69 and wife, and the math guy calculating his odds on the glass bridge before making a run for it

Yeah. I think they did this part well. Gave main characters just enough character development before killing them off. My favorite was Mi-yeon (the older woman that was fucking the ganster guy).

I did and it was very good. Actually made me cared about the characters and their deaths. Except for the asshole mafia guy, glad he died.

I'll conceded to that lol.

I think my biggest criticism of this show is the detective side story, it really went no where but I think it was done on purpose in case if a sequel is made. Which I would be 100% down for.
