PC Part Picker custom: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/SparkClark/saved/#view=8VCN6h

Microcenter Pre-built: https://www.microcenter.com/product/640652/dell-xps-8940-gaming-pc-platinum-collection

main difference i spot:

  • custom GPU is 3060 w/12 GB vs pre-built has 3060ti w/8GB. so the custom is slightly slower but with more RAM.
  • custom build has BluRay, which isn't essential, but it would be nice for movies and possible ps3 emulation
  • custom build has gold rated PSU. not sure what the pre-build has (just says "500 watt")
  • custom build has better case
  • custom build has 2TB HHD vs 1TB HHD on pre-built
  • pre-built has 32 GB RAM vs 16 GB RAM on custom.
  • cpus are different, but according to this benchmark they perform about the same https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-11700-vs-Intel-Core-i5-11400/m1450761vs4112

they essentially cost the same (~$1700)

i'm leaning towards the custom one right now mostly because i know the parts are all solid quality, i'm not getting any bronze PSUs or other cheaper parts. but part of me is quite tempted to just drive 10 minutes down the road and buy that box off the shelf.

any feedback is appreciated.
