Rowling's been TERFing it up all over the internet for years, now.

Johnny Depp was fired and the industry's treatment of him vs how they've handled Amber Heard with kid gloves has been a MASSIVE sticking point for people.

Then let's not forget that Fantastic Beasts was not as widely loved as mainline Harry Potter. And Crimes of Grindelwald, by all accounts, sucked absolute ass.

And we don't even have a trailer.

I honestly think it's the worst new entry to a blockbuster franchise in recent memory.

People shit on the Star Wars prequels and sequels but at least people actually care about them.

The first one was pretty good. The second was BAD. And due to the controversy surrounding Johnny Depp (who plays the main villain, and who was falsely accused and has since been cleared), he's being recast in the 3rd movie. All the momentum of these spin-offs is gone, what a night and day difference compared to Harry Potter.

I know I saw it, and I know Depp played the title role... but the movie is a total blank in my mind.
I don't recall much of the first movie either. Was mostly just harmless fluff.

Literally no one is asking for more of these, and as far as I know they still plan on taking the franchise to 5 movies

Crimes of Grindelwald is the lowest grossing Wizarding World movie and that's before the Rowling TERF and Depp being fired controversies. It was also following up a decent enough movie. So we'll see.

Possibly true, but the last movie the least of any movie in the series, down 160 million from the first Fantastic Beasts, which itself was lower than the main HP series. Plus, it turned off a lot of people.

I can't speak for the books, but the movies handled his backstory well. He was better as a child and a teen than he was as an undead wizard.

Ralph Fiennes is great, but I think he was miscast. His best features are his face and his voice. Both of which were modified in the movies.

His goody-two shoes act as a teenager may have worked on the teachers(other than Dumbledore, of course) but he and his gang of proto-Death Eaters were up to nasty shit behind the scenes. Not mention, you know, opening the Chamber of Secrets and killing a student

B) they decided to use the kaiju-chasing guy as a framing device for the Diet Voldemort war.

Fantastic Beasts should've just been a fun one-off adventure flick and this Grindelwald tripe should've been its own thing

Well, that was over twelve years ago and there still hasn't been ONE sequel, not to mention nobody really cared about Avatar in the long run and Sam Worthington's career has pretty much died

Then there's Disney with their "One Star Wars movie per year"... that is, before the Sequel Trilogy/Solo was a massive failure....

The first one was fun. The second wasn't and had some forgettable plot points that didn't really need to be there. It's like giving us ReMake Nemesis then expecting us to be scared of OG RE Tyrant in his pixelly glory

She didn't have an origin in the original series and Rowling claims it was a secret she'd been sitting on for 25 years, but I just don't buy it. Even if we charitably assume it's not a retcon, it's still just really dumb. Voldemort managed to find a snake-person in the middle of the Albanian forest when he was a mostly-ghost?

Also I read up on what happens in the movie. It says Nagini is a gentle, kind-hearted person who refuses to join Grindelwald. I know characters develop and all that, but that seems a pretty far cry from "murderous snake lovingly follows and accepts the soul of wizard Hitler."

Because Fantastic Beasts is lame shit. The first movie was pretty good, it had Harry Potter world building but the movie was about Newt and the love he has for his animals interspersed with a grander plot of intrigue that his knowledge of magical creatures plays into.

The second movie was a grand clusterfuck where Newt's storyline was an afterthought at best. It retconned a bunch of stupid stuff and ruined one of the core characters, and the main character of the movie had no reason to be the main character any more.

It makes sense for Newt Scamander to be the protagonist of a movie called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It makes no sense at all for him to be a character in a movie called Grindelwald and Dumbledore: The Grindeldore Chronicles. The Fantastic Beasts franchise is just a straight Harry Potter prequel detailing Proto-Voldemort and Young Dumbledore's conflict, and the only reason the Fantastic Beasts name and Newt Scamander has been retained is because they used the first movie to springboard into this extended prequel series.

It's just absolutely stupid. Fantastic Beasts leading into Crimes of Grindelwald? Fine. You've written an extended movie detailing the life of a famous in-universe author and his field of study, and the movie's about a situation in which he had to find a bunch of cool potterverse creatures set decades before the original series. And because it's a prominent detail of the wizarding world, you've tied Grindelwald into it - that's all fine and dandy.

Leave Newt Scamander and Fantastic Beasts at that, and title the next movie The Crimes of Grindelwald without the Fantastic Beasts label. Make Jude Law's Dumbledore the lead character, or anyone who makes more sense than the core cast of the first movie. Continue on with The Secrets of Dumbledore and all that, because names like Dumbledore and Grindelwald have permeated pop culture to such a degree that no-one who liked Harry Potter is going to miss these releases without the Fantastic Beasts label.

Making this the Fantastic Beasts series is abhorrently fucking stupid, because Newt Scamander and his friends don't work as a part of this broader plot of intrigue. Newt is a comedic side-character in the second movie, and the real plot is interrupted with whatever unimportant bullshit they wrote in for him. The other two characters only exist in that movie because of a blatant retcon, and the circumstances leading up to their re-emergence is told to the audience with none of the charm that made them likeable in the first place. Queenie's only role in this movie is to side with the magic Nazis. It sucks.

Just... they could have done this prequel series by making Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them a standalone movie that ties into the next four plot-heavy Grindelwald movies, like a backdoor into a broader Harry Potter prequel. By writing the Fantastic Beasts characters deeper into the canon of this series, it cheapens the characters by cramming them where they don't fit and it weakens the story because the plot happens around them, which means that they only serve to interrupt the plot and make the movies a lot less cohesive after the first one. It's trash.

Nagini is in no way the snake that Harry let out in the first book. Aside from it being male, it's also a boa constrictor which isn't venomous.
