They take the show away and then they go, Will you come back? And you go, Really? Is that what you want? Fine. I certainly hold no ill will. Conan thought that would kill The Tonight Show and chose to sacrifice himself to maintain its legacy. Seems weird to me but I guess it makes sense if you grew up with Carson. I think that's about right. Still shitty for Conan because he thought he was going to be THE guy but then they bumped him back. There's a lot more to it than that. Conan wanted to take over the Tonight Show and was the entire reason he stuck around NBC. In order to keep Conan around long term they got Jay Leno to agree to hand the reigns to Conan in 2009. Leno didn't really want to retire but agreed anyway. In the lead up to that moment ABC and Fox were trying to get Leno and NBC got cold feet. They even considered buying out Conan's contract. Instead they gave Leno a new show at the earlier slot trying to have their cake and eat it too. When this wasn't really working that's when they found out a loophole in Conan's contract that they could push the shows back an hour to try and get things as they were. Leno was basically getting priority with the execs at this point who were constantly looking for ways to crew over Conan. Then the shit show really got started that eventually lead to NBC paying off Conan to quit. The problem with Leno is that he's a corporate stooge. For one, Conan called George and got the okay from him before even taking the job. He specifically didn't want George to feel like the same thing was happening to him. George was on board with it. Conan going to TBS actually extended George's show longer. TBS decided to see if the audience Conan's show brought would help the ratings for Lopez and kept it on for another year.
