I guess the idea here is to "visually manifest" a star from the idea of one? I can have the "idea" despite it not being visual. if there must be a real visual manifestation, the closest I can at the moment get seems to be 2. as far as I recall it is easier to do when near a dream state.

just draw a picture of it but in your head instead of on paper

I've never really thought about this before. But I'm about a 2 I'd say. I have noticed before that my dreams are really blurry and fuzzy, and it's more of a feeling of what's happening. Very rarely do I have a very clear picture in my head when I dream. Is that like the same thing?

just my own speculation based on past experience but I think dreams are in the "idea" portion of the brain rather than the "display" portion. it still feels real since the "display" portion normally creates ideas, and ideas are what we really deal with internally.

it's possible that this is my own limitation and the concept in the OP is the ability to reverse that system and generate imagery from ideas, and people with that ability have much more visual dreams than me.

I'm separating the "idea" from the "display"/"imagery" part, not sure if you see that difference. for the visual part, I can achieve a 2. (it's not that I can't it's just very limited; no idea what it's like for others.) (and I think I can achieve a 4 when half-asleep, but it's also hard to tell if that's an illusion or not and also hard to accurately recall since it happens infrequently.)

I'm rather talented at phantasia - I can not only form bright vivid shapes but I can rotate them in 3 dimenions ,morph them into different shapes, change the colour and even add textures ... all in my head

Of course, it gets increasingly difficult the more things I try to do at once, but something like a humble red star is very easy

...

...

CarlSagan42 has aphantasia though, lulz

I can't actually visualize at all. My brain works in words and numbers, not images.

I even dream in narrative, as far as I can tell.

This pisses me off. I'd just logged out, and I have to log back in for this topic because it's a skill I could use yet do not have. I mean, I can get anywhere from a 1 to a 1.5 over nothing because it's like I don't actually "see" what I could think up, it's more of like a non-visual "potential", that I could feel, amongst a background...

Actually... it depends... but half the time, I don't feel like my mind's eye is this canvas of creative opportunity... I remember taking Seroquel or something and my brain decided to start hallucinating this Doom-based-esque journey behind my eyes... that's the only closest kind of thing, my brain likes to make little icons or characters fighting eachother or running around... Like, I literally don't push it, those are my usual "automatic" either closed eye visuals or against a suitable background to hallucinate over if the conditions are right

But I would love to be able to influence these things more

Visualize the following entirely in your head. Do not draw or write anything, just use your mind. Picture a pair of cubes. The two cubes are connected by a bar through their middle, like a dumbbell. Imagine that the dumbbell object is floating in front of you, one cube close to you, the other directly away from you. Now, imagine that the cube nearest you is red, and the cube furthest from you is blue. Picture the dumbbell built of two cube and a rod begins to rotate, the near, red cube, dropping down and away, and the blue, far cube, rotating up and nearer. The dumbbell continues so that it now stands vertical, in front of you, the red cube on the bottom, the blue cube on the top. Continue this direction of rotation, end over end, three times exactly, starting with that state where the red cube was on the bottom, and the blue cube was on the top. What is the position of either cube, red or blue?

A. I am certain that the red cube is on top.
B. I feel that the red cube is most likely on the bottom.
C. I think that the blue cube is on the bottom.
D. I am not sure. This is pretty hard. Maybe the red cube is on the bottom?
E. I cannot follow this at all. How am I supposed to understand this?
