Personally, I didnt like it. Its not bad - definitely unique. But I suppose its my fault for expecting it to be more like a seinen than a shonen.

Its aight though. The main villain of the Chimera Ant Arc was legit really interesting.

I'm stop and go with it right now. It's not that I haven't enjoyed it, it's just that I have a hard time sitting down to watch anything. No idea where I am, though. Season 3, I think? The one with the auction for the game

BTW, I also think Greed Island sucks.

It's basically an entire area of the world where the rules of nature, physics... it all doesn't matter. It was designed to allow the mangaka the opportunity to just shrug his shoulders and be like, "This would be cool right?"

It makes no sense in terms of overall narrative, world building, etc. Why are you gonna say that they can create a card that can effect real life that you can take for "winning the game"? Like... if they are THAT powerful, how does anything in the world ever even threaten them? In a card you can break all the laws of the world.

The, uh, game takes place in the real world. The cards are the creation of extensive Nen restrictions. The whole reason why those effects are so powerful is the creators of the cards presumably can't use them and have no control over who gets them other than within the confines of the game's rules.

It makes no sense at all. Even if you want to take into account Nen restriction and what it can allow you to do, these cards are so varied and have such a wide range of abilities that they effectively being able to work in the rest of the world (I could understand with a lot of Nen manipulation why they would work on Greed Island itself... like you could argue it away by saying they infused the island itself with Nen to allow for that) is literally rewriting the laws of the world. It is lazy story telling so that he could just do a JRPG story since he was obsessed with Dragon Quest at the time.

Wait, you think Nen allows people to rewrite the laws of the world? The thing that gives every single fucking character in the story incredible, mind-boggling superpowers? You think that thing allows people to break the laws of the world?

Also, they pretty much don't break the rest of the world anymore than typical nen powers. Most of them are "Create a nen beast", "create a nen object", "Move something somewhere", "Some specific interaction with Greed Island Cards". All perfectly normal stuff in HxH.

One of the cards literally gives you pills that make you one year younger for every pill while you retain all the knowledge you had. The card gives you 100 pills. That is a potential reward for winning the game. Meanwhile when Gon uses Nen to age himself forward it was almost treated like it was the craziest shit in the world. Yet Greed Island it is a simple feat among all the other crazy shit these cards can potentially do.

I get it, some people really liked it and are fine with Nen just becoming a hand-waving magic power that does anything. To me it is boring and an excuse to just do whatever without actually thinking about it.

I know he gets better about it later and there are some rules and whatnot... but I feel Greed Island really drops that ball.

Love Hisoka and Bisky though

There's quite a difference between your body de-aging to a previous physical state, and what Gon did. Gon not only aged up, he obtained his future potential in that moment, ie all the training he should have had to do, in exchange for basically killing himself.

Yeah... I hate that Nen basically becomes a way to explain away whatever the Mangaka wants to do. Call it magic then. He did such an awesome job of creating this system of Nen and how they all work in tune with your body and manipulating energy to just be "LOL MAGIC!"

Don't worry about me, I think I just hate how much better in my mind it could have been with it not being just a catch-all for whatever he wants to do. It's an issue I have with a lot of Shonen.

Ehh, from the beginning IIRC the first ever named Nen ability is literally Emperor Time which lets Kurapika use every category at mastery level. The categories are a lot less important than the concept of contracts and sacrifice/restriction to enable powers. The Nen system is really pretty much equivalent exchange.

nen, to me, is kinda like what Stands in jojo were supposed to be. Stands were initially described as a manifestation of the user's fighting spirit, but there are plenty of stand users whose stands don't fit at all with that. whereas the power of a nen ability is literally dependent on the user's drive and dedication

Chimera is vastly overrated, it's extremely slow and heavily narrated with a "tell don't show" theme throughout.

Yeah, I agree with this.

For me, the first couple of arcs totally sold me. I thought Yorknew was fantastic. Coming off that, Greed Island was a painful slog. I will say the arc after I enjoyed as well, but if you haven't enjoyed anything so far you probably won't.
