First off, let me say that Daniella is a good-looking woman and let's not pretend otherwise. She doesn't fill out the requirements for Faye, but not many people do.

She's allowed to stand up for herself and her casting. If I were an actor, I wouldn't turn down a role because I wasn't as tall as the character is supposed to be. It's not like actors are even in a position to turn down roles. If you aren't a household name, you take what is offered.

All of the actors in this show are miscast. Spike is German-Jewish. Black is Jett's surname, not his ethnicity. And Faye is the definition of anime fan service. Netflix isn't going to do a one to one translation of the series. They want brownie points for inclusive casting and they want brownie points for de-sexualizing a character.

Even if she had Faye's figure, they would still cover it up. And I don't like the direction they appear to be taking with her personality. The bubblegum hair makes me think they're going for a Harley Quinn approach and that is a character at the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Faye Valentine.

I don't think the show will do well because anime fans want a one to one translation or no translation at all. Cowboy Bebop never needed a remake. It's The Godfather of anime. You'll never match the quality of the original. All you'll end up with is something akin to The Watchmen.

They're banking on pulling in new audiences who never watched the anime and I just don't know if they'll do well enough to make it worthwhile.

Even as a huge fan of Cowboy Bebop I can't understand the anger. It's not like it's a promo pic of Starfire from Titans style wardrobe disaster(dunno why the first pics they chose to show had that awful fur coat). As long as the character personality wise is at least a little accurate it'll be fine

this is also funny, like faye's costume is integral to the quality of the show. her current outfit is still generally revealing (just not utterly cartoony) so why be mad unless they just want to be pandered too lol

there's a 90% chance this show is fucking trash but it won't be because faye has a less revealing outfit

Is she attacking fans or is she defending the project his is working on? A project she probably put a lot of effort into and wants to defend the show she's in. Nothing wrong with that.

Say you were part of an adaptation and fans of said adaptation were attacking your work long before it's released. Wouldn't you want to defend what you worked on? I would.

People need to give things a chance and stop hating something long before they watch it. Change isn't bad in of it self. Execution matters.

You know, I just realized how uncommon it is for an anime to have a character named after Einstein who is depicted in a positive light.

Some productions kinda go the "he was responsible for the atomic bomb" route. <_<

because iirc, nothing on the show suggests this, but we at least know that the look for Spike's character was inspired by a famous Japanese actor.

There are also passing allusions to Bruce Lee. Spike's fighting style is Jeet Kune Do and the opponent in the second episode is based off of Kareem Abdul Jabar's character in Game of Death.

The general rule of anime is unless states otherwise, they're Japanese to some degree.

That said, I decided to see if it was confirmed anywhere and the Google answer to "what ethnicity is Spike from Cowboy Bebop" was Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

I know why that popped up, but still.

Yeah I feel you. I don't recall ever seeing confirmation in side materials or anything. Just based on the pistol and the last name (which might/could very well be a fake based on his history).

On the topic of the adaptation, speaking as an anime fan in general and a Sunrise fan specifically, I don't agree with some of the decisions...but I don't really care about watching a live action version from Netflix either. So from my perspective, let them adapt it as they will; the existence of this doesn't erase the original.

Faye's outfit probably wouldn't translate well to live action aside from some cosplayers. I think the costumes they went with look alright.

For me, as long as a filmmaker/creator has the right idea, I give them a passing grade (D). As long as they're going in the right direction, I can forgive not executing something perfectly.

When a story loses itself and falls apart, it gets an F.

So far, I'd say this cast is giving me high C vibes. Passable. It could definitely be a lot worse, and she was being funny but also the points she was making were pretty practical.
