Nay for me.

They are not toys to be put away in a small box. They are family members who have the freedom to walk around as they desire.

I say nay. Crating always seemed strange to me, especially if you only have a single dog.

There are times where I need my dog out of the way or I need to have the front door open, and I don't really have a dedicated room that he can be locked in alone so yeah sometimes I'll use a crate.

We have to crate ours during the work day. But they have free roam of the house while were home. Sleep with us.

Dogs should only be confined for a reason, like training or for their own safety during home repairs. But as long as it's not for extended periods of time (overnight, while at work, etc.), I don't see the problem.

Anyone who keeps their dog in a crate most of the time and only takes it out for walks is a monster, though.

Uh, dogs are descended from wolves. They are den animals. They like the security.

We have our crate set up in the living room and when we say "Time for Bed!" She will automatically go to her crate. Sometimes if she wants to relax she'll go in there and we'll leave the door open.

They're supposed to like being in their crates, and it's recommended to have them sleep in there if they would otherwise get into trouble

That said, we tried really hard to train our corgi to like his crate but he hated it. Thankfully he's old enough now that he won't tear shit up.

Our dog is crate trained. It's for his own safety. He likes to ingest stuff that isn't safe. We are home unless we are at work so he is out the majority of the time, and he feels safe in his crate. I also work different hours than my wife so he is only in there really on Tuesday Thursday and Friday.

I have a crate for mine, not that she actually needs to be confined to it. She mostly goes in there to sleep or when she's scared about something, since she has a thing about storms.

I was debating on regaling these people we knew of for about 2 years.

They had a good sized dog, I'd say roughly german shepherd/labrador sized. I don't know what it actually was, probably a mutt. Regardless they were awful owners if you could even call them that. They kept the dog in a crate for 8-10 hours straight, then let it run amok and terrorize the street corner. Dog pissed all over the interior of the house repeatedly because it couldn't go outside, and then when it was outside it was unmonitored. Dog was infested with fleas and even managed to get away, but some facebook people returned her. They even had a cat that got into fights with everyone else's cats.

It was a treat when they finally moved. It also wasn't til after they disappeared we realized how shit the people were. Oh yeah, as a bonus they broke our gas meter and ran our outside faucet.

some dogs take well to them in certain situations. had a poodle years ago that used one to hide in during a thunderstorm. i dont like the idea of using them to cage the animal for long term though.

I tried to for a few weeks with my German Shepherd years ago, she got so stressed that she dug through the floor of the crate, the carpet, the underneath padding, all the way to the wooden boards.

I just let her roam ever since then and things have been fine

Only sometimes. Like if we're going to be out for the entire day and the weather is really bad.

Or if the floors are being mopped.

Or while they dry off after a bath.

Wish my daughter's little maltipoo would be so easily comforted. Fireworks season is a nightmare. Wish those morons would quit going all night, he throws fits and runs and hides all over the place.

It spends 8 plus hours a day locked in a crate?

Dude give your dog away. You shouldn't have it.

Topic seems vague as fuck

WTF does "Kept in crates" actually mean?

Dogs love crates. They love having a comfortable secured place that's theres. My dog frequently goes into her crate when she wants to be left alone or have a nap.

It's also fantastic for training puppies and teaching bedtime.

And as someone else said, somewhere to put the dog securely if like police come to your door or something

I'd argue any 21st century dog owner that doesn't use a crate is suspect. Literally every dog trainer reccomends them.

That said, the implication "KEEPING" as in locking your dog in a crate all day other than when you want it out. No that's absurdly cruel.

Crate is for sleeping.
