I played through the trilogy released last year all in a row and had quite a good time. It's a pretty interesting series really. The first game was incredibly ambitious and ahead of its time in many ways and the remake holds up pretty well for the most part. One of the best remakes I've played really. Mafia 2 and 3 wanted to be more ambitious than what eventually released and you can feel it throughout the games. In Mafia 2's case the game went more linear than they probably wanted. Which overall wasn't as noticeable since the first game was quite linear anyway. While in Mafia 3's case the game was more stretched thin than they wanted.

It's quite interesting how in the first two games you play as guys who are stuck in a machine that basically wants to chew them up and spit them out while in the third you're playing as the guy who is chewing up and spitting out the machine. I think plot wise the series gets better and better.

Overall I'd say it's a series that has great ideas and potential but never quite gets there. Mafia 3 especially sounds like an awesome game on paper and you can see there's a lot of passion put into the city, story and fine details like the police response being quicker in certain areas. But the overall mission design really lets it down. I think they had the idea of giving the player more freedom in taking down the mob. But they didn't really figure out a way to make each business more distinct which they probably wanted to do. All of them basically boil down to sneak into an area, kill everyone and destroy the thing. The only one that really stuck out to me was the Southern Union missions which were way more fun than the rest. Likewise the way the game can vary from great looking or terrible looking depending on the time of day just screams to me that it was a game with development issues.

I hope we see another one in the 70s. Take Two could easily set this up as a complimentary series to GTA that is set in past decades. Considering they're from the same publisher you'd think more tech would be shared across the two. Hopefully one day.

Anyone else have opinions on any of the Mafia games?

Mafia 3 had authentic fap material baked in plus the Rolling Stones so I mean 10/10 from me dog.
