and how 90% of the game is piss easy, then it ramps up from zero to pain in the ass a few stages into the castle?

As someone without much nostalgia for Castlevania's 1, 3, and 4 (owned and played the shit out of 2), I really have to imagine 90% of the love for Super Castlevania 4 is just nostalgia.
1 and 3 have amazing learning curves that feel incredibly gratifying and all the NES games have killer music. 3 especially has an early Dark Souls (more like Ghosts and Goblins) vibe, where you learn more bit by bit and eventually can just crush parts that were originally super hard.
4 actually sounds kinda bad on the SNES. It often has barren level design with enemies that feel like the were placed Mario Maker style. The levels often look like generic "environment_zone" with some Castlevania elements thrown in. There's is a ramp up of difficulty at the end, but even so it feels like the entire game was designed without knowing Simon could whip in any direction.
