One previous family member who doesnt appear in F9 is Dwayne the Rock Johnson, who first showed up as Luke Hobbs in Fast Five (2011). Its a bit of a messy story, with vague tales of discord on the set and Johnson calling unnamed male costars candy asses. In the end, all parties chalked it up to family squabbles.
It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character, Diesel says. My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, Okay, were going to take Dwayne Johnson, whos associated with wrestling, and were going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they dont knowHobbs hits you like a ton of bricks. Thats something that Im proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything Id have to do in order to get performances in anything Im producing.

Why is he acting like The Rock wasn't doing action movies for like a decade before Fast Five? Like he had to draw something out of the man? lol

F&F 1-3 are the best of the series, it was actually about the cars and racing, whereas all the new ones are just lame, room temperature water, generic action movies.

Honestly it's probably because he's jealous and this is his way to power trip over him. The Rock seems to have the career that Vin wants. Vin hasn't really found much success outside of F&F while Rock has hit after hit. Including F&F lol.

I disagree even if we're just speaking quality but they never would have gotten nearly this far or successful if they just kept themselves in the prism of "cars and racing".

I would have preferred the series stay "niche" rather than deluding itself to appeal to a normie audience. There are enough generic action movies out there, it sucks when a movie series that was once about a subject you like (cars) gets ruined by having that subject stripped out of it for the sake of appealing to the general masses.

IIRC Rock said Vin would show up to set late and be incredibly lazy. I have a tough time believing that was on purpose to get the Rock's character 'where it needed to be'.
