If youre playing a game and you know a party member is going to permanently die or leave as part of the story, do you ignore that character because you see them as pointless, or do you go out of your way to use them since you wont be able to, later?

RPGs with these tend to be easy enough in the long run that trying to optimize your every move is pointless. Like FF7

(Final Fantasy) FF7 at least has the decency to auto level reserve party members.

(SMT/Persona) I forget if Persona 3 auto-levels, but I still use the character all the chances I have because theyre cool lol

In a replay I do. I dont think it's come up in a first run because I don't like to ruin the story for myself.

Depends. In FF7 I don't. But in Persona 3 and Tales of Symphonia, I do cuz they're pretty cool >_>

Depends on if their use can help the growth of my other characters. Like, if there's a mechanic where you get more exp/gold/item drops when you kill enemies with the opposite element, I would use a temporary character to maximize that stuff. And I'd use them if they're ideal for a particular fight. But generally I use them a lot less.

In games like Fire Emblem I'll use temporary characters plenty, but prioritize giving kills to others.

FFII did this well where the dead guys had a dungeon of their own, so if you kept them equipped with the best stuff they'd have an easier time

generally ignore. Using FF7 as example, using limit bursts in battle unlocks additional limit bursts. So battles spent with Aeris in the party cascades into Tifa or someone not getting a level 3 limit burst, potentially.

When I tend to play RPGs with a party with active/benched units, I'm much more of "A team forever / everyone else can rot" sort of player, instead of doing any significant rotation.

i always check a walkthrough beforehand and find out if any characters are temp. then i strip and bench the fuckers.
