X-Play made a big deal about Steak/Stake's shoe that kills you.

Cloak of Darkness from Wizards & Warriors

It makes you invisible, but the enemies can still see you.
So it makes platforming harder, but doesn't actually offer any sort of protection.

worst I can think of in about 5 minutes of thought is the spaulder from la mulana. it's an upgrade that adds an afterimage to your weapon swings, the afterimages do 1 damage if you hit an enemy with them. This doesn't sound that bad, except:

1) The good weapons in the game all deal upwards of 5 damage, so 1 damage is sort of useless
2) The majority of enemies, including all bosses, have i-frames for a short time after being hit

In practice, the upgrade essentially does nothing since you hit them with the weapon and then they i-frame through the afterimage. Although sometimes if you or the enemy is moving, you'll hit with the afterimage first, they'll i-frame through the main weapon, and you'll cut your damage by like 80%

I'd go so far as to say the upgrade is an overall net negative

the Flamethrower from Contra is also a solid contender

only one shot can be on screen, and if you shoot again it cancels out the previous shot
of course, everything in that game is trash compared to the Spreader

EDIT: wait, I'm thinking of the Laser, but the Flamethrower sucks too

In the second game, the flamethrower like Magma Gun upgrades into the Meteor Gun which is basically a bad shotgun.

What I love about the Top Spin is that it can OHKO the final boss, but because its so annoying to use Id rather just fight it the normal way. >_>

horse armor

This was my first thought. Most people aren't riding horses anyway and the armor (IIRC) takes away horse invincibility, the exact opposite of shoring up defense.

It's just jank, it's not even the worst Mega Man upgrade.

The homing bullets in DK64 make your guns worse, you actively avoid them when possible. The sniper is necessary to 100%, but adds lag that makes 1 banana almost impossible (basically forces you to start a new game for 100% if you didn't get that banana already).

This was gonna be my answer. There are worse game upgrades, but this is iconic.

I can't remember which game it was, but there was an old JRPG with a spell that was supposed to max out defense, but it caused it to overflow into negative numbers, resulting in most enemy attacks inflicting damage in the billions in a game where HP maxed at 999.

If anyone can remember the game, please post it.

for some reason I'm thinking of the Ultima spell in FF2, which is supposed to be super-powerful but due to overflow is actually hilariously weak

In Star ocean 2 when you used some special skills or spells enough times they got upgrades that usually made them better, but two that I remember got worse Chisato's flamethrower, and Claude's Head splitter.
