the gas powered mower i bought 10 years ago is still working, but i can tell the carb is in need of a cleaning and i'm tired of spending $100 every ~2 years getting it fixed. it's probably approaching time to get a new mower and i'm really considering an electric one.

anyone?

I assume they have battery ones now which might be alright. I hate electric lawnmowers but only cause the cord is such a huge pain in the ass.

battery for sure. from what i understand the technology is pretty good now. you can even get tools where you share the battery between the mower, edger and something like a snowblower.

Dont do it, Ive had a electric and that cord is horrible nuisance. Ive run over the cord couple times and it really restricts your range and movements. Id take a crappy, loud gas mower any day of the week. Not to mention the electric has no strength, as soon as you hit a bit of wet grass or too much, the blades fizzle out.

Unless you have a very tiny yard the math works out much cheaper to pay someone.

My front yard is small enough I just got an electric one with a chord, like the cheapest I could find.

It mostly works fine but yeah if it has to cut through even remotely tall grass it chugs a bit.

I would 100% go for it. Like you I got sick of having to fix a lawnmower pretty much every spring.
((Side note: Just as I started typing this, I could hear my neighbor's mower start-up...and that is over the music in my room!)) ~I'll get back to that.

Anyway, I have a Greenworks, and can get you the model number.
It's honestly a little beast. I have some gnarly areas and it does cut right through it.
It has two battery slots, so there is plenty of run time.
They also 'sense'..I guess you could say, the workload, and rev up or down considering.

The start up, straight up, no questions asked.
Plus, you can dip into their other equipment, Their Chain Saw is ligit, the weedwhacker is great, and there is also an air compressor...all of which will come with a battery. So, if you get the full suite you will have as many battries as you will ever need.

And yes they run quietly. I mow in the middle of the night mostly now.
The mower is no loader they may two box fans.
You can have an open conversation around one while it's running full steam.

I would 100% say go for it.

as much as i dislike planning my life around mowing the grass, i dont really want to deal with that. i'd rather just pay a lawncare service

Go for it. I can only speak for Greenworks, but I have been very pleased.
And ya, it will work out perfectly for nighttime mowing.

in my experience the only ones that are actually worth a shit are going to cost more than a decent gas powered one. and those ones will still have more trouble if the grass is especially long or wet than the gas one.

that said, this is from a number of years ago. maybe theyve drastically improved.

i'm cool with a higher up front cost if it means less maintenance / etc down the road. over the decade i've had my gas mower, i've had to have it serviced four times. three were due to the carb getting dirty and needing cleaned out. each time it cost me $100, but the worst part about it was the inconvenience of dropping it off + picking it up AND having to drive over to borrow a mower then returning it every week while i waited.

from what i've gathered the electric ones are much more reliable from a maintenance perspective since there's no combustion engine to deal with.

that's what i've kinda heard and what i'm trying to figure out ITT

They are great. Highly recommend.

You never have to worry about gas, the charge on most brands last plenty (unless you are trying to mow acres). Never had trouble cutting longer grass and it functions just like a regular lawnmower. And they are MUCH quieter than gas types.

Ryobi brand is good.

Edit: I have no clue why people think these cost $1000+.... Here is one for $300 https://tinyurl.com/b8derz7j

this is what my primary curiosity is. how recent is yours? wondering if the concerns / issues folks had with them being underpowered is a relic of the past? or maybe i just need to specifically buy a more powerful one

fwiw my yard isn't very big. im terribad at estimating distance, but doing the entire thing with my push mower takes me about 40-50 mins depending on how tall it is
