The ME: Remaster stuff is closer to the original concept artwork.

And IIRC ME1's engine was notorious for handling low lighting and shadows poorly.

The Arkham City thing is because the original cutscene was pre-rendered whereas in the remaster it's all in-engine.

Eh I dunno. The light shafts in ME1 look like curtains and don't really make sense.

Technically it's more coherent with 3 but it's way less mysterious and foreboding.

Worst offender IMO is Halo CE. Specifically the first Flood level.

in the original youre in a dark spooky swamp

in the remaster youre in a bright colorful forest

just totally wrecked the atmosphere

I do think game remasters are suffering from some of the issues that movies suffer from when they are remastered for newer releases, where these production companies change the color temperature which changes the tones of scenes or add ridiculous amounts of DNR.

It's just way worse with games because they can go in and change the actual elements of the game, but they don't try and match the artistic direction of the original.
