Mario's 35th birthday party comes to an end on March 31st, meaning there's only one week left to prove your Mario Mastery by defeating 34 other players in a simultaneous Mario 1 battle to the death!

But Ngamer, why would Nintendo pull the plug on such an immensely popular game that's added so much value to their $20 a year Nintendo Online service?

God only knows.

What matters is, read on if you think a screenshot like this would look amazing inside your Switch Album!

Starting with The Very Basics
  • turn off your speedrun brain! this isn't a race, it's a survival mode. you win by collecting coins and killing stuff (...and not falling to your death)
  • every 20 coins equals one spin on the Mario Kart-style item wheel on the top left of the screen, which will randomly return a mushroom, fire flower, star, or POW block (kills all enemies on screen)
  • collecting a 1 UP shroom is worth 20 coins, aka one item roll, so you should always grab it unless your time is about to run out
  • when the timer hits zero you die. every enemy killed with a fireball adds 1 second, while stomping them adds 2
  • ...but the actual goal is to kill them in quick succession. multi stomps, star-fueled killing sprees, and turtle shell kicks are the real ways to build your time
  • use the right stick to set yourself to Attackers at the start of the run and just leave it there; this way all enemies you defeat will be dropped on to the screen of multiple opponents. I've been targeted by 9 people at once, which was of course crazy when I sent tough baddies back at them, but even messing up just 2 or 3 opponents at a time is well worth it
  • when squids aka bloopers attack you on land, you do NOT need a fireball to destroy them- just jump on their heads like a goomba!

The Meta Game
  • the easiest time to earn a win is in the afternoon (EST). the later you play into the night, the more unbeatable Japanese All Stars you'll see joining the server. they're not as incredible at Mario as Tetris, but they're still miles above most North Americans you'll encounter earlier in the day!
  • Special Mode is more difficult than the standard Mario 35 Battle. just stick to the original mode until you've earned your first win
  • everyone selects a favorite level on load, these are mixed together randomly to form the pool of available levels for that run. this explains why you're going to be replaying 1-1 and 1-2 so often at the start of rounds (you can't pick a fave until you've beaten it yourself, so new players have nothing else to choose)
  • give yourself an advantage by selecting a level you know very well that could trip up an average player (like 6-3 for instance)
  • as players get knocked out their faves are eliminated, so you're going to find yourself loading into more challenging levels if you stay alive long enough
  • if you're struggling for coins or time, use warp pipes to get back to the easiest levels and build your resources. if you're doing great and feeling confident, flex by warping to later levels so you can drop difficult baddies (like Hammer Bros or Bowser) on your less-prepared opponents
  • if things are going crazy in your game, reset the action by sliding down a pipe. this will wipe out all the enemies you were facing or about to see on the next screen, but without killing them. (that last part is crucial- if you instead clear with a POW or star, those baddies get sent to your opponents... which means they'll respawn and be back in your face again 10-15 seconds later!)

Winning The Late Game
  • the timer maxes at 400 seconds, so if you find yourself getting close you can cool it on enemy kills and start focusing on collecting more coins instead. just try to keep the timer around the 300 second mark as you head into the end game
  • eventually you're going to hear the music speed up. ignore it! this just means you're one of the Final Five players- unlike in normal Mario it does not mean you need to hurry up and rush to the exit
  • at about 8 minutes the timer will turn red, indicating Max Speed- keeping this from reaching zero is now your main objective. killing with fireballs is no longer enough to sustain your time, you need to start focusing on turtle shell kick-chains and invincible killing sprees to stay alive
  • when the timer dips below 100 its time to start spamming your item box button. you're mainly hoping for stars, but even normal items can earn you just enough extra time to outlast the opposition. (for instance a Fire Flower is worth +15 seconds if you already have fire power; that's often the difference between 1st place and a close 2nd)

Okay, that should be all you need to know to wrap up that epic first win.

Good luck on the battlefield, Mario Masters!
~Ng

I already had a ton of fun with it, and am glad it existed. There was a patch they added to the game last year that somewhat killed my interest, because they made the timer turn red faster, which lead to the game ending before later stages even showed up. It was fun winning on stuff like 6-3 and 8-2, but after that patch, it just became a timer battle on looping 1-2s...not very fun.

I'm sad that I came so close to having 10 perfect games in my 10 game stats, but soured it with a single 2nd place. But it was still good.

Definitely feel like this game has plenty of life left in it, but it was fun. Would've liked to see some more modes added (let's get those lost levels) but if it was always planned as a temporary thing I guess it makes sense they didn't develop it that much. Would've been nice if they were more up-front about why, though.

If that's how you feel you should try out this week's Challenge Mode (runs through the 30th)! Nintendo loaded the pool with 35 of the more challenging levels to be picked randomly, so you'll rarely ever see 1-1 or 1-2, and they mostly end with either everyone dying on tough platforming or waves of Lakitus and Bowsers overwhelming everyone. To help they give everyone 99 coins at the start of the match, but most players don't use them wisely and are still dead pretty fast.

Another tip is to save your coins for when you really need them. I've seen some just use them right away. Generally use them either if you're in a tough spot (e.g. bowser, hammer bro, or lakitu on the screen and you can't kill them with fireballs) or when the timer is in red and getting really low. If you save enough coins, you can spam the item roulette in crunch time.

Personally I like to try a roll anytime I'm small and don't know where my next mushroom is coming from, just because no matter which of the options you get it will be nice. But yes the ideal strategy is definitely to hold them until you're in an impossible situation and/or to extend your timer in the end game.

I usually do that too, rolling the roulette when Im small unless I know Ill get a mushroom soon. Also, sometimes if there is an item box, Ill roll the roulette too before getting it, in case its a mushroom so I can upgrade to flower. It depends on whats needed though.

On a related note... WARNING, only five days left to grab Bowser's Fury!

(It will be pulled from the eShop after the 31st, you'll still be able to find physical copies but no further ones will be printed.

...which also means the copy you buy is going to be worth lots more going forward.)

Whew, what a relief!

In other news, as much as I'd like to see everyone score a Mario 35 win in the next couple days, my ACTUAL prediction for what's going to happen is: Nintendo pulls the servers after the 31st, there's a public backlash, they say "but it costs money to keep the servers online, so what could we POSSIBLY do?" and everyone answers "release a $10 DLC upgrade like you did for Tetris 99, it would be printing free money!"

With that in mind, here is my Modest Proposal for what Nintendo should include in their $10 one-time-purchase Mario 35 upgrade.

  1. The promise that the main Mario 35 mode remains online, untouched, and a totally free experience.
  2. CPU Battle - You versus 34 bots in a normal Mario 35 showdown. Like in Tetris they could go from Difficulty 1 (simple win) to 5 (bit of a challenge), and you could alter some settings like how many starting coins everyone gets or how many starting seconds. [In reality all the bots would be pretty bad and easy to beat but that's FINE, so are 75% of the actual human competition.]
  3. The Mario * Challenge - Replaces the current Special Mode. Very difficult, and only available to players who have purchased the DLC, or finished first place in a Mario 35 match, or reached Level 101 (hence the *Star* for the Challenge). Map pool consists of only the favorite levels selected by the 35 players, with no World 1 levels available to be picked. Instead, all the Lost Levels are available to select from. If someone doesn't pick a fave before clicking in their choice gets randomized, to ensure a good variety in the pool. The timer doesn't turn red quite as quickly in this mode, to give more time for everyone's natural skill to play out. If not enough players join within a minute, Level 5 CPUs fill out the rest of the slots (like they do in Tetris Maximus).
  4. All Levels Unlocked For Practice Mode. This includes all the Lost Levels as well, so you can get in some reps and be ready for the Mario * Challenge. You still need to beat a level once in a live game before it becomes selectable as your Favorite though (and for you to earn the special Easter Egg reward).
  5. 100 Achievements And New Icons. A new achievement screen that covers everything you could imagine: your first win, KOing 3 opponents in a game, getting 10 stomps in a row, defeating every enemy in the game once, and so forth. Each of them unlocks a new icon you can set as your scoreboard avatar. All the Mario 1 sprites have already been used, so to fill out this roster we can start pulling from Lost Levels, 2, 3, and World.
  6. Play As 7 New Characters. A new character select screen where you can choose to play as Mario from 1, 2, 3, World, or New. Also, you get to pick from the rest of 2's cast: Toad, Luigi, and Peach. Nothing changes in terms of gameplay or physics, it would purely be a palette swap (just like in Mario Maker).

Hopefully those ideas would be enough to convince some players to spend the $10? Personally I think the casual players would be super intrigued when they start noticing the new icons on the scoreboard and new characters in spectator mode, and plenty of them would be interested enough to go ahead with the DLC purchase.

@TomNook does the above sound like something you'd be into?

Also while I'm mentioning things, just one little quality of life update I'd love to see, not part of any DLC package:

  • when it shows the KO box on the scoreboard, a mini sprite for whatever killed that person should be displayed there as well. "oh wow, I knocked out the #5 finisher with that Bowser I sent him from the end of 1-4... and he's a level 201? how cool!" not a big deal, it would just be fun to see

#3 especially would be excellent. I love the Lost Levels, so seeing it injected into the game would be very cool if done right, which your #3 also covered. It would probably be best as a self-contained mode entirely, but I feel like they'd probably screw something up. But hey, I got about 40 hours of play time with Mario 35, so of course I'd buy a Lost Levels expansion!

Does that mean it's ending 8 am in Tokyo tomorrow? I was having trouble finding the exact end time.

I've been playing every day the last week or two, not to get my first win but just because it's a fun game. I'd totally buy $10 DLC if it included what you describe.

There's currently a Special Battle going right now that will end at 2:59 AM EST today, so I assume that's when the servers might go down.

If you've already won a game but are looking to complete your board/open everything up for training (by playing each level at least once), you're in luck! Nintendo added a special Final Day Super Battle that does away with the random level loads and lets you play through everything in order after starting at 1-1.

Good luck out there!

Welp, Mario is dead now. Well and truly dead.

But I had such an amazing time on his last night on Earth! Spoiler warning from beyond the grave: M35's big Easter Egg was that if you reached and completed every level in the game, you unlocked Luigi as a playable character. Heading into the final night I had only one level still to beat, and as you saw in the last post, the good news was I'd be able to get there since all stages loaded in order for the last Special Battle. The bad news though... it was 8-4.

Meaning I essentially needed to beat Mario 1 in a standard full-game runthrough. Except I only had one life... and it needed to be a speedrun... and by the time I reached World 8 we'd be down to five expert players who'd put 100+ hours into the game and who'd be dropping nonstop Hammer Bros and Bowsers and Lakitus onto my stages. Oh jeez!

It took an hour to develop a strategy where I could collect enough coins and rack up enough kills to have the time and money resources to give World 8 a serious run. The following hour was filled with heartbreak; twice I reached 8-4 with a good chance at going the distance only for my opponents to die and have me awarded first place too soon. Another time I got there but faced a wave of Hammer Bros as small Mario and ran into the worst item box luck EVER (rolled four straight mushrooms when any of the other three options would have solved the problem) which ate up all my remaining time. Later on I got back to 8-4 but was too low on resources- got down the final pipe and into the underwater basement but drowned there with zero seconds on the clock.

Finally I returned to the scene of the crime with a decent number of coins in my pocket. I executed the level well and didn't run into too many additional enemies, got back into the underwater basement but found it was filled with crazed Hammer Bros and extra Bloopers, and I only had 24 left on the max-speed clock! Fortunately I'd been able to save enough coins to go wild on the item boxes, spamming them just enough to feed the clock while I dodged the fire wheels and squid and hammers and worked my way to the final bridge. I flew over the last lava pit and knew time was tight so I said "screw it" and jumped directly into Bowser, using the invincibility to reach the ax and end the game.

Normally I'd rescue the Princess at that point and celebrate, but instead I was just warped back to regular old 1-1. I took a second to catch my breath, then the screen froze and, whaaaa...

VICTORY, it was all over!

There had only been one remaining opponent by the time I reached the last part of 8-4, and if I'd taken the time to fireball Bowser to death like usual I would never have made it to the ax! Instead I earned the full game completion, the level unlock, the first place finish, and also a BOATLOAD of coins. Over 1800, which was so much in fact that...

It ranked me #138 out of about 135,000 players who completed the final day Special Battle. Holy smokes! The ultimate reward though was of course

That sweet, sweet Luigi Time!

So yeah, a shame to have to attend Mario's funeral but wow, what a epic way for him to go out. Now let's continue the celebration with

Congrats for finally beating 8-4! I tried to get there too on the special battle but never made it that far. I ran into trouble with the lakitus on 4-1 and 8-2. I already beat 8-4 through the normal game so it wasn't so much for completion.

My last regular battle I did manage to win and got a pretty good coin total of 3314, though that's only enough for 988th place. I had over 900 coins which is among my highest ever, though I had to burn through a good bit just to stay alive at the end. I guess the special battle coin threshold is lower, which makes some sense since no one can farm 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 3-1 for coins.

Well Nintendo hasn't brought Mario back yet, but now I see what they were thinking- create space for the newest Old School Battler on the Block, Pac-Man 99!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ2c-6CJ-tM

This one's going to be permanent because they're already selling a DLC add on like Tetris has, so feel free to get invested.

Maybe after a couple months of giving this a shot they'll bring back Mario with the permanent DLC treatment.
