Probably just because it's a kids' story and the role of a policeman doesn't fit. It's a conflict against a corrupt authority, which would obviously be undermined by the invocation of a higher authority, and a kids' story works well with a principal as the supreme authority.

Plus, they'd have to have a scene where they explain why the police wouldn't investigate and/or fails to find anything, which is a commentary on law enforcement that a kids' film really doesn't need.

you are remembering it wrong
matilda didnt have her powers at that point and the blonde girl wasnt her best friend
the blonde girl does survive but its through sheer luck

matilda doesnt get her powers until towards the end of the movie
its really late by the time she gets them

Had some stuff come up but I finally finished the movie lol. I was expecting a cheesy nostalgia trip but it held up really damn well.

The wormwoods were shitheels but Devito and Perlman still manage to come off as oddly likable so Im glad they made it to Guam and escaped the feds lmao

...does it say something about my emotional development that when I was a kid, i saw the ending as a strictly happy one, but now I cant help thinking of all the inevitable fights and friction Honey and Matilda would have as mother and daughter? Every time I see relationships made to be happy endings my brain nowadays just jumps to all the disappointments that are a part of it lmao

anyways, damn good movie.
