Tbh there's maybe some benefit to not having much prior experience, as opposed to having to relearn past concepts that have changed between games.

Cities in Civ 6 are really built around districts, and as you progress you'll learn to identify before founding cities what makes a good location: having enough food and production in the surrounding tiles, but also having one or two that make for really good tiles to place districts, due to the adjacency bonuses. You should think of each city as specializing in something that will help reach your victory goal, rather than just a jack of all trades that's interchangeable with the rest.

I read on Kotaku that it's better than Civ V with the Brave New World expansion pack.

You can increase happiness by having amenities for your citizens, as well as unique copies of luxury goods. Honestly, happiness isn't too big an issue unless your cities' loyalty is at a net negative.

Try to build your farms in triangles (each farm tile is touching the other two) because you'll get bonus yields once you hit the feudalism civic.

Most important thing is to try to plan out your districts so they get optimal bonuses.

The AI is very stupid, so take advantage of that. Eventually you'll be able to secure alliances, and as long as you renew the alliance on the turn it expires, you can ensure that the other civ will never get to declare war on you. Also try to send delegations on the first turn you meet an enemy civ, because they'll be neutral to you on the very first turn but will find some reason to dislike you immediately after.

I always decline their delegations and shit at the beginning so they can't find me to inevitably forward settle me -_-

I guess it depends, I play under the assumption that they've probably already found me, or will find me soon enough that I'd rather try to avoid a war.

I have well over 800 hours in Civ V, but I don't get Civ VI at all

which is kinda to be expected since it took a couple hundred hours to really start grasping V

Go look up the "Saxy Gamer" on youtube.

He is the best Civ 6 tutorial guy out there. He had in depth reviews on each Civ and each Wonder. I highly suggest you watch his videos on the different districts and how to use them. Then maybe watch his tutorial on culture and religion.
