Heard a lot of great things about Vanillaware games, but I'm hesitant to try them because some people say they're button-mashy and get boring after a while.
I watched some gameplay videos of Muramasa, and it reminds me of Castlevania with the action and platforming. Is that a fair comparison? Also, which is best to start with? --- ~Jacksonville Jaguars~ ... Copied to Clipboard!

Muramasa is much more linear and action focused than Castlevania. The two main characters play exactly the same but it's a lot of fun. Not exactly deep gameplay but it's visceral and fast paced. The DLC characters all play differently and are really fun too, with their own story modes.
Odin Sphere is similar, though each character plays differently. I'd say start with either Muramasa or Odin Sphere. I haven't played Dragons Crown yet but it's a bit of a different beast from what I understand ... Copied to Clipboard!

I wouldn't say Muramasa is a platformer at all. All of their games are mostly action RPGs, though Muramasa is low on the RPG mechanics.

They are side-scrolling beat-em-ups with RPG elements. Dragon's Crown in particular is heavily inspired by the DnD arcade games

Odin Sphere is a much better game than Muramasa. Make sure you get Leifthrasir since it's a vastly improved version of the original. --- All the stars in the sky are waiting for you. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Muramasa imo is more button-mashy than odin sphere, there's a dark-soulsy element of "hang back and wait for an opening" in odin sphere. But both are fun for sure.
