Austria 2016 and Estonia 2017 are indeed great songs!

Love, Love, Peace, Peace is the best interval in the history of Eurovision, I agree

I've not watched any Eurovision past the year 2000 barring a few exceptions. A few years ago, I watched them from its first in 1956 all the way up to to 2000. Took a good while, but through them I learned, among other things, that often the winning song wasn't my favourite. Most of the time it's good, but not great, and ends up in my top ten anyhow. On a few occasions, however, it disappoints me greatly. I especially despise 1968's winner, though I must add that Cliff Richard's almost-won doesn't crack my top ten for that year either. My top three for that year finished 7th, 5th, and 13th respectively. You can go looking for them (and laugh at my musical tastes), if you want.

Anyhow, I'll probably start on the new millenium contests some day. Or maybe not. See, I've learned to not to judge the songs by their live performance. Sometimes, a nice song is absolutely gimped on stage (Norway in 1978 and Sweden in 1979 come to mind), and other times, the stage show completely overshadows the actual song. At worst, it makes the song feel like it's there because it has to. Maybe ESC stands for European Scenography Contest, hmm?

The superfluous theatrics aren't a "new" thing to the Eurovision, by the way. Might've been in 1980 when Austria had a black woman in a leotard and football helmet dance around and sing a few wordless vocals, as apparently the song was so unremarkably mediocre it desperately needed something, anything, to be remembered by. Needless to say, Austria didn't score high that year.

So, when I judge a song, I prefer to listen to their recorded versions, which typically are without distracting visual elements, embarrassing performer mishaps, unrestrained by the three-minute maximum length rule, and might feature studio effects that cannot be replicated faithfully live.
Alas, this approach to the ESC music has made continuing watching the show a redundancy. I don't need to see the song to enjoy it, do I?

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

@Thompson That is a totally legit viewpoint. I love the visual spectacle combined with the songs but that is not everyones cup of tea. You should listen to the newer entries on Spotify
