Swaths of it are dumb, but they were absolutely spot-on in their criticism of Marvel given that they got rid of many of their heroes and replaced them with "diverse" alternatives, as opposed to just making new characters. What's more, the comics were terribly written and they often went out of their way to make the original heroes look bad, like making Captain America into a Nazi. Not sure what it's like nowadays, but it got to the point in 2018 or so where Venom, Daredevil, Moon Knight, and Old Man Logan were nearly the only readable Marvel comics. The main "leader" of Comicsgate, Richard C, Meyer, isn't even against diversity in comics and praised DC's The Silencer comic - that features a black lesbian single mother - due to the comic being well written and the main character being likable.

Yeah that was a weird era for Marvel.

like, passing the mantle of an established hero to someone else is a common trope in Western comics. But Marvel did that to like, a bunch of their major heroes all around the same time. >_>

didnt bother me much since I dont read much Marvel, but still. Kinda weird. <_<

Didn't the sale for comics also fall off a cliff to when they did this? I just remember reading about how they made Jane Foster a female Thor and the sales for it sucked.

sales for comics are weird. IIRC they dont tell us what the digital sales are, and they count the trade paperbacks that collect the issues as their own thing.

the Jane Foster Thor stuff might have sold like shit in the floppy side, but she might have made up for it in digital/collected sales. I think thats the same way Kamala Kahn keeps her books. Almost nobody buys her individual issues (most comic shops in my area wouldnt even order them unless they were on someones pull list) but I think the collected editions sell well with the target demo so she sticks around.
