The leader of the Union army was way too lenient at the end of the Civil War. He basically just let the traitors go home. Had we crushed the confederate states and really harshly punished them and cracked down hard, I think some of the worse elements of this nation today would not exist. like maybe no modern Republican party (yes Lincoln was Republican at the time but that was not really the same party at all that they are today. Lincoln would hate modern Republicans)

That was Lincoln and then Johnson. Not Grant.

Yup, look at Germany and Japan after WW2, they got crushed and were then thriving by not having to spend 60% of their GDP into defense like the US.

I just watched a documentary about Grant. When the war ended, Grant ended up becoming president but he lost his nerve to crack down on the south and let the KKK rise to power. Public opinion was that he was acting like a dictator when he dared to try to make white southerners treat black people with respect. And he ended up caving in and abandoning the black citizens of the south

For a few years black people in the south had equal rights and then they got crushed and had to wait over a century before they got back to where they had briefly been

But anyway my point is we should have utterly crushed the south and destroyed their culture and made them be like the north

I'm sorry if that sounds mean but fuck the confederation. And the confederate soldiers should have been arrested. Not allowed to go home. Grant was too merciful

Oh, I agree. But all of that is on Lincoln too for not hanging the southern leaders. Here's what I would have done:

1. Hang Jefferson Davis, the CSA VP, all of the southern generals, all of Davis' cabinet, and the CSA's excuse for a Congress.

2. Every slaveowner that fought or supported the CSA is stripped of his property and it is given to his former slaves.

3. Every Confederate state is now reduced to a "territory" and gets one senator and one Congressman.

4. One of those two from each state has to be black.

5. Any groups like the KKK are rounded up and executed.

There. Racism would have been gone by 1900.
