Holy shit that was an INCREDIBLE movie

I expected it to be hokey, but instead what I got was one of the most expertly-directed and paced films I've ever seen. Unbelievably great soundtrack too.

I just can't believe the movie that basically invented every cliche in the book came across as so fascinatingly original even after all this time.

And the directing - it's so perfect. The angles. The pacing. The building tension, the silence. Etc.

It reminds me of Film Noire in a lot of ways.

It also holds up better than any movie from the 60's has any right to.

For other takes on the Western film genre, I recommend The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Unforgiven... and The Quick and the Dead. <P

Thirding; Leone was a master. Not big on Fistful of Dollars or Once Upon a Time in America, but For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Once Upon a Time in the West all rank amongst the best movies ever made.

Also, I have a For a Few Dollars More poster in my living room.

and while it's not a western, I also recommend Once Upon a Time in America.

probably the most epic mafia movie that's not one of the Godfathers, IMO.

Also, Quigley Down Under and Tombstone (I forgot to mention them in the previous post).

All of these films show views and tell stories that are different from the "cowboys and campfires", etc. typical Western genre tropes.
